Android 1.6: Donut

CDMA, quick search, text-to-speech, an improved Market and support for more screen sizes and resolutions are on the menu. But will allowing devs to decide which displays to support cause compatibility headaches and envy? We’re hoping for an October release. Via Engadget

great update but who ever has freshface running, it would wipe out your phone. Sucks.

The 1.6 Donut update for the G1 is worthless!! it has done nothing but cause problems for my G1. First it would force close every program i tried to open so i did a master reset 3 TIMES!!! and still it didn't fix the problems, it got so bad i had to send in my old phone and get a new one!!!!! even with my new phone the touch screen will just stop working at random, my boss has the same phone and the same problems!!! what the hell!!! please fix these problems and release a new update that will work properly!! please please!!!

That's the first I've heard of that... and I'm sorry to hear it. That sucks.

Yeh I've got the same problem with the touch screen. If u manage to fix it can you please let me know.

droiddog.com + phonedog.com are the best!!! keep you the good work guys!!! HERO will be the Iphone killer.. hahaha

do you know if the Sprint's HTC HERO will sport the "Donut 1.6"? if not, how do we update it? thanks

The Hero comes with 1.5, but I am pretty sure that when the HTC Tattoo is released (it comes with 1.6) then 1.6 will be released for all HTC android phones. You will have to keep going back to www.htc.com/support - the update will appear there...

Suppose they can saqueeze this into G1s? I'm hopeful, but not much. There was talk that the G1 would be left behind with Donut, due to space limitations. We can hope. And no, I do not expect CDMA on my G1. You should not, either.

haha, just noticed but whats up with the accent on the narrator?

You know what bugs me? It's all changing so fast. It's incredible that consumers have all this technology to choose from and constant innovations and improvements. The downside is the same. It's changing too fast. The consumer spends a good deal of money either upfront of signs their soul away for two years with the same device. But it's changing too fast to remain content with what you have. Even outside of the every day gadget freak, the average Joe is stuck with an outdated device within a matter of months and they are feeling it. I'm not a fan of staggering technology rollouts to resolve this but I also don't care to keep taking the financial hits every time someone improves something or comes up with a cool idea. I just realized how way off topic I am with this comment lol

And who's fault is it that you cannot be content with what you have and live within your means? Honestly, can't everybody just make their purchase decisions based on what their needs are and be satisfied with that? Why do you have the unhealthy obsession to compare your e-penis all the time?

If Android is introducing CDMA support in 1.6, does that mean that the Sprint Hero will need to be 1.6 when it is released?

I think they must have had an early release of 1.6 and the new Hero update to prep the Hero for release. If not, I'm sure both will come shipped.

I just got the Sprint Hero today and it has 1.5, no problems with network or anything though.

You know what i wish they would add. you know how you do a voice search, i wish they would do voice to text message! this way i can text in the car without having to press any actual keys other than the speech button. otherwise this seems to be a good upgrade.

I don't know for sure, but I think this will be possible. Maybe not built in to the stock messaging app, but coders should be able to figure this out. There is a text-to-speech API, which I think goes both ways.

well, when i'm lazy i use the google voice search to write short messages. then i copy and paste the text into my sms. so it has to be possible.
