Sorry European Hero owners, no Donuts for you!

You’ll just have to settle for 2.0! I can’t say when, but it is coming. If the customer service email from an Android Guys tipster isn’t enough for you (first quote below), then check out the tweet from @htc that follows:

Dear HTC customer,

Thank you for contacting our Customer Support Center. We are dedicated to providing you with the best quality service and answering all of your questions and concerns.

The Hero will not be receiving the Android 1.6 upgrade, it will however get the 2.0 one. Do note however that we do not have a confirmed release date for this upgrade, all I can recommend at the moment is that you keep yourself updated by visiting our website regularly as the latest information will be available to view from there.

Best regards,
HTC customer support team
HTC Corp. Global Service Division

The rumors are true! Hero will be getting an Eclair update. We ask for your patience as we update Sense for the fancy new Android OS.

I just don't like the tone. Sounds like it will be a while. I had a Hero for a week and ended up returning it due to poor signal and general slowness (don't get me wrong, I really liked it). Now I'm kind of happy I did that. I wouldn't want to wait for HTC to get around to working up a new ROM for each Android release. I guess I thought they would be on it faster than they seem to be. I plan to try the Droid when it comes out. I'm more comfortable with that, as it's a Google Experience phone, and will hopefully get regular updates.

My concern is performance. i'm already unsure if I will keep the Hero due to some lag in response time switching apps and keyboard typing. I love the design and sense ui, but i think the processor is killing it. But what to switch to in the mean time? Moment? stock ui... when will it get 2.0? that's my technology love/hate relationship.

Hopefully those of us in the states will receive this update soon after...or it will leave us sing the unchined melody.

I have mixed feelings (as a european hero owner -or- chinned hero type!). I was kinda looking forward to seeing what the new market looked like in donut, but I have always thought eclairs were superior to donuts (even with the jam of the nicer market). I doubt it will be that long (relatively speaking) as they are talking Q1 for eclair rollout aren't they?
