The difference in “with Google” Heroes

People have been noticing that some Sprint Heroes have turned up with an unadorned battery cover, while others are sporting “with Google” branding. “Why does the phone in this-or-that review have it, but not mine?” This has been the cause of some confusion because many believed (including myself) that “with Google” meant vanilla Android experience. And missing answers have lead to all sorts of speculation.

I just wanted to post a quick update to clear the air about the “with Google” rumors. The branding does not indicate whether the phone will be connecting to EvDo rev.0 or rev. A. It has no bearing on whether or not the device will recieve OTA updates. It does not facilitate the sending and receiving of MMS. It does not affect Sense, apps, or the Market in any way.

The difference between phones with the branding and those without is…. Non-existent.

I have it on high authority (someone from HTC who definitely knows) that “with Google” was simply added later on in the production process. I don’t have information on why or what kind of arrangement HTC and/or Sprint has with Google. But I can tell you that all of the above rumors should now be laid to rest.

Who knows, maybe Heroes without the branding will be worth more on ebay one day. Probably not, but maybe.

I have a Hero without the, "with Google." I show that I have EvDO rev. 0. Ah whatever this is all techy stuff.. Does the phone load? Does it get the info in a timely manner to you? Lets sit back and enjoy it.

Wish my Hero had the "with Google" branding. As for the EVDO REVA and REV0, I just wish I had EVDOwhatever in my area.

I work at Sprint and we're told rev a/o will be available in 1.6. The phone was supposed to be shipped as 1.6 but the cdma network fell a part. An update for the phone is on its way this month. Rev a is functional right now but is showing up as rev o.

Why would Sprint advertise the phone as Rev A if everyone is on Rev O? Does Sprint not test the phones before it gets in the consumers hands? I don't understand how this could happen.

So how many people got hero (after October 9th) with "with google" branding on it??? It's just interesting, cuz so far I read comments from ppl whose phones didnt come with that branding (including mine)..

Lol my tech language needs updating, is there somewhere I can go to read up on all this stuff about rev and rev 0 ev-do and all that, lol? Anywho, pretty good I didn't think to ask if the Hero that was on display at my local sprint store had the "with Google(TM)" branding on it.

I have been out and about in the southern California Orange county area today and my phone has never shown as Rev A. Always Rev 0.

So do we know why some people have only Rev A on their Hero's when living in Rev 0 country but not others?

It looks like the rev. A reports are false. I think everyone's on 0

Those reports are not false, I was at a Sprint store today, the managers Hero was Rev-A. He did not have w/Google on the back.

Well, the connection between "with Google" and EvDo revision doesn't seem strong to me.

I agree, but now i see why most people at this point have "non-branded" phones - cuz first 50K heroes were made without branding (if we believe the source)... I guess then our non-branded heroes are now called "HERO LE" (as a Limited Edition) :)

I had it backwards, people are showing rev 0 .. rev a is the newest revision (faster / less latency).... As far as everyone can tell, it's due to the fact that HTC had to hack together / borrow code to get CDMA and Android to play nicely with 1.5 ... 1.6 is where CDMA begins official support. Considering that Sprints own website states it's a Rev A phone, it had darn well better be something fixed in an update =)

thanks for clearing that up. mine is special now lol.

My guess for why the Sprint Hero now has "with Google" branding is because you can switch from Sense to default Android in the settings. You aren't forced to use Sense if you don't want to.
