Your Sprint HTC Hero questions answered – part 1

I already have half of the next video ready to go, so don’t worry if I don’t get to your question here. Keep ‘em coming, folks. I’ll do the focused, in-depth stuff within a week, but probably not a lot of it. The camera and browser are coming though.

Check out parts two and three.

How well does the phone’s touch screen do while you have it pressed against your ear and face? Does it easily hang up w /o wanting to? Does it have a proximity sensor or anything like that?

How is the camera on the phone? I heard sprint tweaked the camera settings on the phone, and want to see what quality of photos it takes. I’m not expecting it to replace a point and shoot, but want to see what it can do in decent lighting.

    Hi John,

Great reviews. Definitely bookmarking this site and Phone Dog.

This phone was really enticing until you mentioned that MMS failed. Have you tried testing it again? Either way, it really sounds as though Android or maybe the Sense UI is lacking that polish. Since more Android phones are coming out, it will light a fire under Google’s butt to improve their OS.

    • John Walton says:

The MMS are not working for me, but like the protected Market apps issue, I’m sure it’s because I’m using an early demo unit. I just can’t see this phone shipping without MMS support. Who would do something like *that*?

Rough average, how many apps could you have downloaded to the internal memory on the Hero??

This is a burning question for me…does a headset with mic work in the 3.5mm jack? I assume music would pause when you get a call, etc. Could you try the iphone headset on it to see if it controls music and calls?

  19. David says:

This is a big factor for me in whether or not to get this phone: the performance.
Not so much the lag, but the actual time it takes to do things, say, open an e-mail (BGR claims it takes 12 secs?) and the time to switch the keyboard from portrait to landscape and vice versa.

  21. David says:

I would really like to know how the transition speed is in switching between portrait and landscape keyboard modes. A clip if you switching between portrait and landscape keyboards repeatedly would be nice to give us an idea of the time it takes for the phone to do that. Also, BGR claims it sometimes takes literally 12 secs to open up an email?? That’s a long time… what have your experiences been?

Isn’t the MMS failure the result of Sprint’s tinkering?

I thoght they’ve said numerous times that it’s been disabled for most of their Smartphones [like Touch Pro and Diamond]? Is MMS working on any smartphone?

the screen is glass.. I just dropped it this morning in my garage and now its shattered.. it works but im scared i'll cut myself. Does anyone know where to order new glass only? is it the same screen at the gsm hero?

  32. NewToDroids says:

I heard because of the Sense UI that the Hero has some problems opening or running some apps properly and cause them to force quit. Is there a list of these apps or is this even prominent enough to take notice of? Also is the “lagginess” of the phone dealbreaking? I hear the the Samsung Moment is smoother, but i'd much rather get this.

  33. Cecil says:

As far as your second question, there is definitely more lag in the Hero than on the Moment. Moment is snappy compared to the Hero. Even after multiple apps intalled. I had the Moment for a few weeks but returned it due to short battery life and GPS was reporting my location incorrectly (often in other continents), and it was really LARGE. Now I have the Hero and not having a keyboard is a pain, but all the other nuances make up for what I miss with the Moment
