Your Sprint HTC Hero questions answered – part 2

John Walton

I’ll be doing my best to get to all of your questions this week, as well as the videos dedicated to the camera and browser. the 10-minute limit on the DroidDog YouTube account (as well as the computer I use to process the videos) limits how much I can do in one day, but stay tuned.

Check out parts one and three.

EDIT: Pictures can be downloaded through the stock browser via long-press. It didn’t work for me before, and is sketchy now. I’m answering questions based on what it does when I play with it; not from a manual or press release.

check out endgaget and cnet's back pictures on the cdma hero they have the "with google" logo. here is a link. http://www.engadget.com/photos/htc-hero-for-sprint-hands-on/2293707/ (from engaget.com), http://reviews.cnet.com/smartphones/htc-hero-sprint/4505-6452_7-33770450.html?tag=mncol;lst (from cnet.com) what does that mean?
  • Lo?ick
ANYWAY TO OVERCLOCK THIS BAD BOY? ITS NOT REALLY USING THE FULL 528MHz right?
  • I can't verify this, but an anonymous poster at PhoneDog said that the processor is scaled to run at 528 (or something similar). I don't know what that means, but I can tell you that for most apps it's faster than my over-clocked (528) G1.

I'd be interested in hearing from anyone who has rooted their Hero. Have you tried over-clocking?
  • Marcus
Thanks for doing this review. Now I am more torn then ever. The Hero or the Moment? I like the fact that the Moment will have a keyboard, camera/flash and faster processor, but don't like that it's not HTC UI. I will get the Hero and try it out for a couple of weeks, then if I don't like it I can exchange it for the Moment when it comes out Nov 1
  • Ish
Really nice video, I think you guys have really amazing jobs. Doing reviews for phones and what not, I'd love to have that job. Although I'd have to get a lot smarter when it comes to acronyms and what things actually mean lol. Good review, can't wait for the other ones.
  • Ornette
I've got the GSM Hero (with the newer updated HTC ROM), and I agree that the browser is slow. I've tried using Opera as a replacement but although it's faster it's really annoying to use because it hasn't been optimized for the Sense UI (doesn't exploit pinch-zoom) and scrolls slowly.

The stock Hero browser on the GSM Hero (which I assume is the same as on the CDMA) DOES allow pictures to be copied (or sent by email or mms) just by long holding and "save as" etc, in a pretty intuitive way..
  • How long do you have to press and hold it? I'm going on 30 seconds here.
  • turns out I need to reset my Hero.
  • @DrorBecker points out that you can disable Sense and use Google's vanilla home. I hadn't tried disabling Sense since the GSM Hero, where I had super buggy behaviour with home replacements. Vanilla home actually seems to work OK, and can run Sense widgets. I'll do a video segment on that.
  • Oakland510
    One more question...

Can the Hero or any other Android phone do Screen captures like the iPhone?
  • Oakland510
I like this phone, but I see two major differences that hold it back from the Moment and eventually the rumored HTC Snapdragon builds.

    1. processor - but as John mentioned in a previous post, if you run it like an iPhone then it will be fine
    2. Keyboard on the Moment and a capacitive touch screen is a killer combo
    3. proximity sensors are lacking from the Hero, but on the Moment. Nice to have, IMHO, but I suppose I could live with out.
    4. Flash for the camera on the Moment. I noticed that I was missing this more and more when I switched from my BB Curve to the iPhone.

It is a really tough decision especially when you know HTC is going to release some kind of flagship phone with better everything.
  • KaiserSouze
I agree with Nofowuw. I don't know if the Sprint Hero has been gimped in some way, but on my GSM Hero, I can long press on an image in the browser, and I get an option to "Save Image" along with the usual options to share the image.
  • PeDe
well i just wanna praise you Jon on doing a great job so far with this site. I actually left phandroid.com and started following this site b/c you're able to get news faster and be more objective even tho your pro-android [for the most part] so just keep up the great work
  • matthewbdc
in case anyone hasn't heard if you have a best buy reward zone credit card and have spent 2,500 dollars in the last year starting today you can purchase the hero from best buy mobile. In-store only. Good for new activations or upgrades.
  • Andy in Indy
Tethering should be possible. According to the Sprint manual you have to use the HTC Sync software that is loaded on the micro SD card on the phone.
  • Well I missed a lot on this one, didn't I? I don't have Windows, so I can't test that.
  • Nofowuw
You rly cant download pics from internet with the stock browser with sprint Hero? :O

You can with the EU Hero :O
  • Yes, I need to reset my Hero./
  • Art
    Thanx! John!
  • I would *really* like some more information on this if anyone has it. Particularly because of the update issue which is causing a lot of confusion - for me and many others. Thanks, elserg.
  • elserg
im the one who asked about google expirience...i know what a hero looks like sir lol , heres another link , its a video review of the hero, and you can clearly see the "with google" branding on it. Just in case someone trys to say that maybe there was some photo shopping going on. So please try to figure out what thats all about it, this ties into OTA updates and donut and eclair , since google phones are alot easier to update.
  • I don't know what to tell you. I'm not finding any information on it, and I'm not getting any responses from the people I'd hope to.
  • I stand corrected. Am I missing something, or does that article say nothing about what that's on there?
  • I don't know if this is definitive proof as to whether or not you're nuts. You might want to seek professional help to determine that.

    xoxo
    breon
  • Shawn
    So I'm not nuts. Thanks.
  • Thanks for the vid.

Weird that you can't download images from the net. You can it on the vanilla Android browser (long press; save image, view image).

I like my keyboard, but I'm just about sick of having a bulky phone in my pocket. The screen is getting a lil loose (not much) and when it vibrates, it sounds like it's going to fall to pieces.

Can you take a three-shot of it next to a G1?
  • kem
whats a vanilla android??? and can u change the look on ur keyboard??? i know theres 3 diffrent kind of keyboards but i want to know if u can change the theme on it for free?
  • Will do, Breon.
  • Shawn
I would swear that I've seen some pictures of the back of the Sprint Hero and it says "with Google" on it. Am I nuts?
  • Kara
Your right, Shawn, some Sprint Hero's do have "with Google" on them. I bought one from BB and it had that on the back.
  • iRetro
No, I heard it was a retail version or something
  • Brad
Cellular South has the Hero "with Google". Cheaper that Sprint in every way and outstanding coverage. But I hear they only have stores in the Southeast.
  • Art
Hey John I heard you mention that the browsing was terrible. Would you suggest I get the Hero? I wanna get a phone for it's media capabilities internet browser, video playback( movies),music,etc.. similar to what u would do with a iPhone or Pre.- But I Love Android and Sense!
  • I was talking specifically about speed there - not data, but the responsiveness of the software. I should have clarified that. As for movies and music, I've had a good experience. But if I buy Hero, one of the first things I'll do is put another browser on there. I'll make a browser video before I return this phone (within a week).
