Your Sprint HTC Hero questions answered – part 3

Visual voice mail, trackball comparisons, text message threading, and more. I think I’ve got about two more of these coming, and then we’ll move on to the in-depth camera and browser videos.

Check out parts one and two.

EDIT: You can sync individual groups in the people app, as per David’s comment below. But I don’t know if un-checking “sync all contacts” there effects the sort of global Android sync, or just the manual sync in the people app. I will look into it.

And here are the G1/Sprint Hero comparisons requested by @Breon:

Hero-versus-G1-1

Hero-versus-G1-2

Hero-versus-G1-3

Hero-versus-G1-4

Just got a used htc hero, and the notification screen does not come down when I scroll from the top of my home page. I need to hit the top part of the silver bar, and then hit the Notification icon. looks like for some reason the notification function is locked on my home page. Any suggestions on how to fix would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

for water damage and this works quickly take the battery off, dry off any water, get a vacuum cleaner and suck out all the cracks and holes. put in a warm place like a heating pad on low or anything with low heat you don't want to melt it. about one hour you can put the battery on and see if its ready. if you see moisture leave battery off in warm place for hour more. i have used this on phones put through washer, pool and toilet. karen warren

i have the same question and havent been able to find the answer anywhere.

ihave a question,my htc hero keyboard has stoped turning into lanscape mode..i have tried to turn it sideways but it just dose not work..what do i do?

John. Great review and love the videos! I have a question... Everytime I personalize a scene and try to go to a new one, it asks me to save my changes as a new scene. I would like to be able to save it on one of my previously saved scenes (hope that makes sense). Do you know if thats possible? Thanks!

This may happen because you download some application that is messing your phone up. Try to delete some of the applications that you download before you phone started to messing up and restart the phone. This may fix your phone. Good Luck.

Ok this is my question, I dropped my HTC Hero™ with Google™ on a glass of water with ice by mistake, I been trying everything like put it on rice, blow dryer, etc. Now I don't know what else to do? Do you recommend something??? Please let me know, thank you.

Hi I just got the HTC hero for sprint and I love it. But i am having huge problems with it and its not the battery. When i txt alot it will say it has an error and will delete all my messages, and I have just found out that I am not receving all the messages people send me. the other night it would not let me call and was doing some weird stuff i turned it off and back on and it worked fine for 5 min and then did it again. it also says it has an error and I have to fforce close it. It will turn off. Any advice?

can you type/text in landscape mode?

when you look at the htc hero and the g1 on the photos, the hero changed WAY too much, they don't even look like they are brothers like they are supposed to

Just got one, great phone, so far the only question i have is can the display light up when a text's comes in? seems like a little thing but have missed a few text because it does not.

I just bought my Hero at the Sprint store. It came Android version 1.1. How do i force an upgrade to at least 1.5?

Two things: 1) I want to buy a seperate battery charger for a spare battery, but they are only selling ones that are for the Euro HTC Hero. Do you know if a Sprint HTC Hero battery would fit in a Euro HTC Hero charger? http://www.expansys-usa.com/p.aspx?i=187744&partner=froogle 2) Is this a real issue because my battery is draining pretty fast and do you know if HTC is working on the problem? 'Text/dialier related battery issue: Sending an SMS text message via the stock Message app triggers something in the Dialer app that keeps the phone from going to sleep mode from that point forward, dramatically draining the battery.'

I've heard, in a very unofficial context, that HTC is working on a fix for the dialer/battery issue. I have no idea if the source is legit. The charger is on my list of questions. I'll see what I can find.

I had a question regarding the callerid picture setup for people. I currently have the hero and when i select a his-res pic from my sd card to use for a specific contact ... the picture looks nice and sharp ... the first time i call the person to test.. the picture on the screen is still sharp .. but the next time i call the person or they call me the pic is no longer sharp .. fuzzy and of poor quality ... it seems that the device is saving a small thumbnail picture for callerid internally and uses that for all future incoming and outgoing calls to that person .. it is no longer pulling from the SD card ... so when the thumbnail picture is used and zoomed in big .. u are loosing the sharp image ... is anyone else having this issue ? can u shed some light on this .. is this a known issue or is there something wrong with the pictures that i am using for CID .. i tried multiple pictures with many contacts and had the same results.. also tried setting up CID for contacts via google online account and syncing to phone to come back with same results.

I don't know what to say on this one - I'm not finding any information.

Hello John. Hows is the HTC Hero on water resistance and that factor of durability? If I were to drop it into a pool of water, would it be still functional as a device? Have you seen or heard much on this subject?

Sorry, Julian. I haven't heard about this. I'll look around, but this is definitely something I won't be testing! :)

Hi, I unwillingly just tested that... My phone slipped out of my jacket pocket and into a bucket of water. I instantly pulled it out and removed the back cover, battery, SD card and SIM card and dried off all visible water drops. I put it away to dry, and the next morning it worked fine. It seems to have kept the water out pretty good, but some water must have come in through the audio socked and USB socket. For now it works perfect, but I am of course worried about delayed effects by this. It was pure water, so I'm praying that everything is OK. Its not recommended though :)

Okay.... I am probably missing this somewhere, but does the Sprint Hero come with OS 1.5 or 1.6? And, my second question is, will we be able to upgrade when a newer version comes out? Thanks for the help! I am new to all this! :)

Right now, it comes with 1.5. 1.6 is available to other Android users in the US, and Hero owners will be able to upgrade later. I'm not sure when though.

do you guys think if and when we do get 1.6, we will have the same holdup/issue whith eclair(2.0) (3.0 muffintop) so on and so forth comes out? not only with sprint also htc dragging there feet on updates, whatever the excuse maybe?

Pretty cool, I was able to go to a Sprint store today and I got to briefly play with the Hero and omfg, it is definitely everything I have ever wanted in a phone lol. Like I said I was only able to play with it for like 20 minutes at the store but that was enough to make me want my upgrade date to get here ASAP.

I have a question that I CANNOT find a answer on. I do not have the phone yet but was in a sprint store today and played with the phone for a long time. Anyways, on the phone you can set a home page for the browser. But when your on a internet page and want to go to the homepage, how do you do this? You would think the phone would know your on the browser and if you hit "home" it would take you to the home page. But if you hit "home" it takes you back to your main page of the phone. What gives?

I'm not sure if there is a shortcut for that, but you can open a new window (goes to homepage), use a bookmark, or use history.

Regarding those trackballs. I have it under good authority, (ok maybe not good authority, just my opinion), that the original G1 trackball is the best implementation of a trackball to this date.

I just bought the phone today. IT ROCKS! :D

You definitely CAN choose which groups to sync. In the People app, go to the Groups tab, hit menu, and select Sync Groups. Let's you choose from the groups you've created in Google Contacts.

I didn't even know it came with Visual Voicemail. When I launched the app, it said there was an upgrade. I clicked 'upgrade', it downloaded, then launched the standard Android package installer :) If you have any tips and tricks for the Hero, post them here. http://www.droiddog.com/forums/showthread.php?t=507
