Motorola Motus, a.k.a. Backflip: first image and specs

This is preliminary leaked info, so pretty much everything is subject to change. Still, what we’re seeing makes sense and lines up with FCC docs so this is probably at least close to what we can expect in the final product. Android and Me has posted the image below, which depicts a phone with a reverse keyboard – i.e., when the phone is closed, a QWERTY is seen from the back. Their tipster also gives the appropriate name, Backflip.

This is being presented as a successor to the Cliq. Just last night – my first with a Cliq – I was thinking about the follow-up, concluding that I really like MotoBlur. It just needs, in my opinion, some graphical polish and a larger, higher-rez screen. If the specs presented with the leak (seen after the break) are correct, there really isn’t a big difference between Cliq and Backflip outside of the physical design. Bummer. We already knew the resolution, thanks to a leaked Moto roadmap, but a couple of surprizes on the spec sheet would have been nice. I’d also like to see staggered keys, but I’m actually pretty happy with the Cliq keyboard. This one is expected Q1, 2010.

So, like the EnV, but backwards? Weird....

@Franco SolariBy reverse keyboard he means that when the phone is "closed" you'll have the screen on one side and the keyboard on the other. When you "open" the phone, you will basically open the phone in half and flip the keyboard side so that it matches with the screen (like in the picture). Not sure if "matches" is really the appropriate word for that. I guess I could also say the keyboard flips down to face the user like a normal slide-out qwerty would. Maybe I should just leave it alone, though. :DAlso, the Passion is rumored to have a 3.8" screen. @linkeditThis phone was not designed with top-of-the-line specs in mind. It's aimed towards a different demographic than phones like the Droid, iPhone, Passion, etc... Hence the $99 price tag. It typically takes about 2 years for a new chipset to be made small enough and with enough cost efficiency to be main streamed into phones. We're finally starting to hit the mark where Snapdragons and OMAP3430 processors will start popping up in more and more phones. The way manufacturers are putting out phones at the moment, it seems like they're going to continue with the qualcomm arm-11 based processors to use for the low-end market, and put the "next-gen" processors in the big boys. We aren't going to see the arm-11 based processors phased completely out of the market yet just because their successors are here. The phone isn't bad just because it's not marketed towards your "needs and expectations". Someone else will buy this phone and give it the love and attention it deserves!

wow. yet ANOTHER Android phone with the same internals as the G1, G2, Hero, Eris, Cliq, etc. What are these handset makers thinking?????

This has to be on eof the worst desings I have ever seen. Who wants to have the keyboard on the back of the phone

Compared to the other Androids I've been testing - Moment, Droid, Behold II (virtual) - yes. I'm not a fan of Cliq's virtual kb, but the physical one is my fave on an Android other than G1.

care to explain what you mean by reverse keyboard? i really dont understand, specs look okay but its pretty common among android, screen is too small and so is rez im still waiting for snapdragon with 4.3 screen and HTC sense 2.0, aka the rumored HTC "Dragon". Great article as usual keep up the good work

Whoa, did you just say you LIKE the Cliq keyboard? Now I know why my feet have been so cold lately, hell has frozen over..
