Sprint Hero OTA update

lighting-strikes1

It’s rolling out and the reports are rolling in, and so far, it’s looking good. What is the “it,” you ask? The Hero updage that Engadget Mobile told us about a few days ago. The number one improvement I’m hearing about to far is a fix for the SMS glitch that was draining your batteries at far too rapid a rate. Some are claiming performance improvements as well. Quick warning: the over-the-air update is based on Android 1.5, so don’t have a heart attack when you see the notification.

Sometimes the Gmail was a problem for me i think, but i saw a few other people who had their notifications turned on tricked the phone into not sleeping. Did you try resetting your phone after the update? Also, if you use Hi Aim, the phone does not go to sleep, thats what ive noticed or probably any instant messaging service, since its constantly updating your buddy list etc even when the screen is off

@ackhun Did you do anything else after you updated to fix the awake/down time issues? I updated yesterday but my awake time is still at 100%.

I posted some more details about what was updated and some observations here: http://beerpla.net/2009/11/18/sprint-and-htc-release-the-first-htc-hero-firmware-update-1-56-fixes-major-bugs-adds-small-tweaks/ The verdict is: Sprint and HTC delivered quite a nice little update. It's missing some more of the needed fixes but also fixes the critical bugs. I think the this update will hold us over till 2.0 now.

re: my previous post just below...my dialer keypad tone is set to off and it still vibrates.

just updated and the phone is quite a bit snappier. BUT now my phone dialer keypad vibrates when i dial. Where do i turn this off!? driving me nuts-O!!Thanks

Is it just me, or does the phone seem more responsive to the accelerometer?

When you're on a call there are now on-screen buttons to mute or put the call on speakerphone. Haven't noticed a difference in awake time YET.

Yepp, I definitely read in some cases where people have automatic notifications for it? Im not so sure if ive seen that setting anywhere, but im not so sure if its been working for them. Too bad Sprint is too lazy to make a list of things fixed within this update the day they pushed it out. By the way, I spoke to a Best Buy Mobile representative that I know, and she received an e-mail saying the HTC Hero from Sprint will be offered at 99.99 for eligible upgrades instead of 179.99 on Sunday Nov 22nd. Luckily when i got there, i got a free activation and that 99.99 new customer price. But if best buy dares to lower the new customer price, im definitely price matching!

I've had people tell me that they got a notification. The method you offered works as soon as the update is available, even if it hasn't been pushed to a specific group of users yet. I think it's the same deal as the OTAs for T-Mobile customers.

I have an htc hero, its actually not an automatic OTA, most users will have to jump to settings>about phone>check for updates, and update their firmware! Definitely does fix the Awake/Down time issues reguarding the SMS! Im so glad i switched back to my hero.
