Petition Digg for an Android or Google tech category

I love Digg. Since discovering the site in 2006, the people of Digg have turned me on to countless tech rumors, political issues, social happenings, fascinating bits of science, and hilarious images. Digg is home to a wildly diverse population that somehow manages to maintain a unique, cohesive, community vibe. It is an interesting and often addictive Internet oasis. It was Digg that reignited my interest in Linux after seven years of dormancy. It was Digg that made me take a closer look at Scientology. O.K., it was /b/ via Digg, but still.

Because of it’s community-driven content, Digg is often where a given subject’s worthiness of mainstream attention is determined and the site has the ability to grant that attention as well. Considering what we all know is about to happen with Android and Chrome in the coming year, I think it is time that the mainstream became more aware of it. I’d also like to see a decent forum for all of us in the Android community to share the more important stories on a larger scale. Digg needs an Android or Google category in the technology section.

If you go to the Digg homepage and look just underneath the Digg logo, you’ll see a series of topical categories: Technology, World & Business, Science, etc. Hovering your cursor over any one of them will cause a down arrow to appear to the right of the category. Clicking the arrow will reveal a list of subcategories (continued after the break):

Nice layout, right? But while there are Apple and Microsoft categories – even Linux/Unix – there is no entry for Google. Considering what Google contributes to the tech world on a monthly, weekly, or even daily basis, this seems to be a little out of whack. Let’s take a look at what happens when you search Digg… (cont.)

For Android:

Wow! 15,509 stories. Pretty impressive, right? Well, that seems like a lot but this is Digg. They receive millions upon millions of story submissions, most of which never see the front page. Perhaps an Android category isn’t necessary right now. 2010 could change that. But look what happens when one searches for Google (cont.):

A quarter of a million stories and counting. Yeah. Now search for Microsoft and Apple. Each of them have about 150,000 stories submitted! Maybe Google doesn’t have its own category because the company reaches into so many seemingly disparate realms of tech that their world and Internet presence cannot be contained under a single header. Maybe it’s because they haven’t offered any products that you can hold in your hand just yet. Maybe someone at Digg doesn’t like Google. There could be other important reasons but I think it most likely that someone at Digg just needs to be reminded of the need. And that’s what I intend to do.

@kevinrose – founder and head honcho of Digg – get’s more @replies than the combined total of everyone reading this article. The way to reach him is through the Digg front page. If we want to make that happen, we really need to work and act together. So Digg this article (you can use the badge at the top of this page), spread the word on Twitter, and send a link by any other means you can.

Let’s make our voices heard!
