Archos 5 Internet Tablet and SmartQ V5 MID

Archos 5 Internet Tablet

The Archos 5 Internet Tablet is a 4.8 inch touch screen web browsing multimedia player. Just some of the major specs are an ARM Cortex A8 processor, 256MB RAM, up to 500GB storage, and Android 1.5. You can find a more complete spec sheet at the Archos website here. While the screen is aboslutely amazing looking, the responsiveness definitely leaves more to be wanted. Even though this thing comes with tons of audio and video codecs including 720p playback, at a roughly $400 dollar price point, I don’t see it flying off shelves anytime soon.

SmartQ V5 MID

Definitely a lackluster release, but still worth a mention. The SmartQ v5 is a MID with a 4.3 inch touch screen (resistive), 600mhz processor (able to be overclocked to 800mhz), and 256MB RAM. The best thing the SmartQ has going for it would have to be the price point, somwhere around $200. Also worth a mention would be the HDMI out and the fact that it not only ships with Android but Ubuntu and Windows CE 6.0 as well.

Once upon a time we might have been really excited to see two Android powered tablets for under $400, but with the specs and quality of these two it’s more like, “eh.”. Don’t get me wrong, I’m excited to see Andorid making it to more devices, I would just like the devices to pack a little more “umph”.

Archos 5 Internet Tablet. Quirky, bugs, and issues...yes. I love mine that I got at Best Buy for $299 and is the best travel companion I have ever used. Archos continues to work away at the OS diligently.Star Trek on a mobile device in 720p while checking your Twitter and Gmail can overcome a lot.
