Motorola Droid 2.1 update rollout will begin this week!

Just a couple of days ago we were talking about Android and fragmentation, and lo and behold this pops up.

Moto

Droid users will soon be able to get their hands on some 2.1 goodness. There’s a catch though, apparently live wallpapers and the new app drawer won’t make the jump to the Droid. It is not clear yet if it’s because of the Droid’s hardware or maybe these improvements are Nexus-device only; time will tell. But hey, at least you get multi-touch and the news and weather widget. Right?

I have not much time, but I've got many useful things here, love it!

So I'm guessing the MyTouch users will just be SOL for an OTA update? My phone actually said it had an update available this morning and I let it install, thinking it would be at least 2.0. However, when the installation finished, the firmware was still 1.6. Is this Goggle's way of trying to stem the flow of angry customers who feel like they are being left behind? Sending out a fake update?Android seemed really promising and cool but now... I'm thinking I'll be choosing a device with a different operating system as soon as I find one that is appealing to me.

here's some rumored info about the cliq's upgrade to android 2.1 http://mobilenewsnow.net/mobilenewsnownet/2010/...

Besides, even if this release doesn't provide those feature there's nothing to say that those features won't eventually become available on the Droid in future revisions. Perhaps Google and Motorola will figure out how to get those features to run smoothly on the Droid. Live wallpapers sounds cool but I wonder what eye candy like that does to the battery life. The only reason I want 2.1 is so I can support flash 10 when it becomes available.

http://mobilenewsnow.net/mobilenewsnownet/2010/... hey here's an update in regards to the Motorola Droid and Android 2.1

Seriously what are you guys whining about? You get everything except the two things that run janky on the Droid. How do I know this? Because I ran a rooted version of 2.1 on my Droid for a few weeks. Everything was faster and worked great except 2 things 1) Live Wallpapers 2) The App Drawer. The App drawer animation is just flat out annoying and not worth the slowdown. Live Wallpapers look great, but they single handidly would cause lockups and force closes. Now that was before I overclocked my Droid to 800Mhz, 950Mhz and now 1Ghz. But still it's not worth it. And most people won't root and overclock, those that do can easily get both of these features via the Mod community. Good job Motorola! Saving hundreds of thousands of people from unnecessary problems with their phones for nothing but visual flair.

probably... greedy Google this blows

Google just wants to keep it for themselves. Not getting the live wallpaper and the animated tray blows. This update is lame who the hell needs Google goggles update when you can just downloaded from market. I would switch out of android as soon as something better comes along.

Just noticed that the page outlining the details of the 2.1 update has been taken down by Motorola. The only things not in this update are the 3D launcher and the Live Wallpapers. The only reason I say they're not in the update is that they are not listed in the details. Omission doesn't necessarily mean that it wont be there, but it is not on the list.I also wonder why they took down the details page? Could there be a delay? Are they revising the update details to include one of our pet wishes? As sand through the hourglass, so are the days of our Droid... We'll just have to wait! Which I know we all love!

i guess they forgot about the cliq huh

Yes, it works in text messaging. You have to speak very clearly though. I experienced some funny translations tonight.

I don't care about the eye candy, but will the speech-to-text work in messaging and such? And is it gonna be an OTA update?

What about us MOTO CLIQ users?

You know, leaving out other feature in 2.1 is a big turn off, doesn't matter if it's a hardware issue, and beside linux support to run on anything...

People need to stop listening to enGadget. They start rumors like 12 year-old girls in the bathroom...

well that sucks...so that probably that if even the DROID won't be able to live wallpapers then other android devices won't be able to as well :(

Meh, I dont buy it, the Droid is fully capable of running full 2.1 I know because I have ran almost every "new" thing that 2.1 has to offer. If this is true its because Moto has had enough time with it or is rushing it out because most people were whining and crying where is our 2.1 etc.
