Weather Channel Promoting Android App On Screen

If you just so happened to be watching the Weather Channel and notice a QR code pop up on screen with the words “ANDROID USERS SCAN HERE” recently, don’t worry it wasn’t just you. QR codes are quick response bar codes that are designed with the purpose of being scanned by something like your phone’s camera. After the QR code is scanned your phone will send you to your browser and then usually to a website. When the QR code that appeared on the Weather Channel is scanned, it takes you directly to the Android market. Using QR codes for advertising is nothing new, but this is the first time I’ve seen it on TV for Android. I like it.

What do you guys think, is this something you would like to see more of? Is it tacky? Overkill? Let us know in the comments or add me on Twitter.

It's supposed to be with Googles app called Google Goggles, but it's not available for users on 1.5. (I'm using a Sprint Hero). I'm guessing it's only available on users of 1.6+ that use the new Market

I think this is awesome but what app do you scan it with?

Definitely a good thing, it wasn't like they stopped the broadcast to tell android users to scan there, it was a simple animation that told us. Definitely amazing.

I would love to see more of the qr codes everywhere. A really good advertising strategy.

i think its good idea. It could be used for taking people to direct links to competitions and stuff (and at the same time the company gets more advertising through it like sponsorship of the competitions and that..)

Awesome!! +5 for Android!! I haven't seen any ads like that down here in H-Town YET but I know its coming!
