That's true only in a fixed market. It's like fast food. 40 years ago all you had to do was put on a restaurant in a town, and people would come eat. Today, everyone eats fast food. To gain a customer, first you have to take one from another chain. We are in the beginning of the smart phone age. Currently the number of cell phone users with smartphone's is 16%. That number is growing at a very fast rate. Both Apple and Android are gaining customers that are new to the market. So it's great news for both of them.

And to your point of 1 to 2 years down the road. Apple needs to worry with they stop growing. If in 2 years Apple is selling 30 million iphones a quarter, and has less then half the market, I am sure they will extremely happy.

Once everyone who is going to have a smartphone has one, and to gain a customer you need to pull one from your competitor, then the game is on! Right now, it's just awesome times for everyone (unless your microsoft).

Well, I didn't mean it like the iPhone is gonna be dead next week. Of course their sales are growing, everybody is growing, Android is just growing much quickly. I meant it in the sense that if your share drops 10% in a year, and the competition's doubles in that same time frame, they ought to be worried about 1 or 2 years down the road.
