I'm really glad you posted about this! I had a weirdo error when logging into my gmail account yesterday and had a quick flash of panic as I thought about the possibility of my account being gone forever. Then everything was fine and I forgot about it haha. I had never really thought of backing up my email up until then, so I'm going with Thunderbird since I've always been curious about trying it out. Thanks for the info!

With all due respect, I think you've made this way more complex than it needs to be. Even IMAP can be a pain to configure for many people, so an even simpler thing to do is turn on POP in gmail and connect thunderbird to the pop side. Everything you send and receive on the server, even stuff you send from your Droid automatically gets copied to Thunderbird. Easy peasy!
