I have tried both and prefer Handcent over chompsms. Both are as configurable and free but the main difference is that there are no ads on Handcent.
Just noticed that you finally switched from AT&T to T-Mo.
Great review and I completely agree. I've been using ChompSMS for a while and have made sure that all of my Android friends know about it. They are still the little guy on the block next to Handcent SMS but they offer a better app in my opinion.
