DroidWars: Twitter clients – Q1, 2010

App: HootSuite, by HootSuite

Price: Free

Features: Absolute control: springboards, tabs, theme sharing, vertical swiping, insane options

Tested: 03/19/10, Nexus One | Version:1.0.2

hootsuite_tweetThe developers of this app, which has been very popular and celebrated amongst iPhone users, refer to it as The professional Twitter client. And while new to Android, its name is already buzzing around the blogs and gaining fans. The introductory price of $1.99, which was originally set to expire on 03/19/10, is apparently going to stick around for a bit. Perhaps the devs were expecting more downloads. This one currently sits between 1,000 and 5,000.

HootSuite uses a swiping system for organization. Dragging your finger from right to left or left to right changes between “tabs” that represent different areas of the Twitter environment: timeline, replies, DMs, etc. You can customize which tabs are available, which makes this app one of the most customizable at the lower levels. Tapping any tweet opens up a new window, where you see complete URLs and have access to user profiles. The profile pages are some of the easiest to navigate – if not the most advanced – in the world of Twitter apps. Following, blocking, user info, and more are available, and I consider this to be HootSuite’s second strongest feature, next to the innovative navigation. I haven’t fallen in love with this app yet, but it is a strong contender. HootSuite does win my “easy tweeting from multiple accounts” award.

I love the features of Twidroid Pro especially being able to handle multiple accounts. But lately I've trying twicca and I definitely enjoy the simple clean UI and smaller footprint. I'm using twicca more and more.

Twicca COULD be the best twitter client. There is only one huge problem: When there is a notification for new tweets, these tweets are not cached by the application. This means you have to wait until the tweets are loaded. This is anoying somtimes, so i use twidroid now.

Seesmic is by far the best Twitter client. It has the cleanest interface and is completely free. I tried Twicca after reading this article, but I found its interface to only be marginally better than Twidroid, which I really dislike.

That was actually on my original list, but I had way too many clients and had to trim away the ones I didn't like as much. I know it's a good app, I'm just not a fan, personally.

What should I have mentioned?

Why no mention of Swift Tweets? Simple, fast, and includes an awesome "light" browser within the app.

Nine pages? Come on. I was going to read this until I realized you are just jacking up your page count hits to earn more money from the ads on the right side of the website.

You havent reviewed seesmic well. Its my favourite android twitter app out there

For me, it's almost more important that I can fit as many tweets onto a screen as possible. I find Seesmic, Twitdroid, and Touiteur do the best at not wasting screen space. I hate having to constantly scroll when using Tweetcaster or Hootsuite. If touiteur was faster it would probably be my number 1. For some reason the load times on that are far longer than with Seesmic or Twitdroid.

Agree, Twicca is the best twitter client ever made. They could make a widget to update right from the desktop, without enter the app, but it's ok. I also like Tweegee, when on Android 1.5 (Twicca is 1.6+ only).

I'm with you in hoping tweet deck is released on Android. Its the main twitter client i use on my PC. Opening pics and vids in the client itself is a revelation. Navigation is easy. Facebook integration is alright too. Fingers crossed it will get released on android soon :).
