Since the release of the Nexus One, back in January, Google has stated that it will be coming to Verizon and Vodafone “this spring”. Apparently only half of that is true.
If you frequently visit Google’s phone storefront, like I do, you probably ran head first into this statement:
For Verizon’s network, you can buy the Droid Incredible by HTC, a powerful Android phone and similarly feature-packed cousin of the Nexus One.
The team over at Phandroid contacted Verizon and Google about this matter. Google was the first to respond:
We won’t be selling a Nexus One with Verizon, and this is a reflection of the amazing innovation happening across the open Android ecosystem. Verizon Wireless customers who want an Android phone with the power of the Nexus One can get the Droid Incredible by HTC, which can be pre-ordered now and which will be available in Verizon Wireless stores on Thursday, April 29th.
While the Nexus One and Incredible share a lot of features (1GHz Snapdragon, 3.7″ screen, etc), the Incredible out-specs the N1 in several areas. It has an 8MP camera versus 5MP, which is a HUGE difference (Sample Photos). Plus the phone has 8GB (6.6GB usable) of internal storage. While third-party apps can’t access this yet, you can still store your music, camera pictures/video, office documents or any other kind of file here. In my opinion, the best feature of the Incredible is Sense. I know some folks aren’t a fan of Sense, and “Can I turn Sense off?” was one of the most asked questions for my review. I have to say, I like it. I had a G1 and now have a Hero. I’ve tested and reviewed all sorts of phones. The Sense interface is the best experience I’ve had on a portable device.
With this, and the news that the Vodafone Nexus One will be sold in their stores (more on that later), where does that put Sprint? They’ve been pretty quiet about their release of the Nexus One. Will the EVO 4G trump the N1, like the Incredible did?
UPDATE: Here’s Google’s statement from their Nexus One blog.
Today, Vodafone begins accepting pre-orders for Nexus One from customers in the United Kingdom at www.vodafone.co.uk/nexusone, and on April 30th Vodafone will start selling Nexus One in their UK stores, online, and over the phone. Soon after, they will also begin selling Nexus One in France (SFR), Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, and Spain. Vodafone is our first European partner to distribute the Nexus One.
In the US, if you’ve been waiting for the Nexus One for Verizon Wireless’ network, head over to http://phones.verizonwireless.com/htc/incredible to pre-order the Droid Incredible by HTC, a powerful new Android phone and a cousin of the Nexus One that is similarly feature-packed. It will be available in stores on April 29th.
We are very pleased with the amazing pace of innovation and strength of the Android ecosystem and to be working with partners around the world to bring the Android experience to more people.
