App review: ADW Launcher

If you’re experiencing a bit of Froyo envy, you might want to try out this free app called ADW Launcher. Of course it won’t allow you to tether, and it won’t give you animated gallery previews, and it won’t increase the speed of your device. But the action buttons might help you imagine that you’re running a newer version of Android than you actually are. If not, at least you’ll have the option to tweak your homescreen experience and try something a little different.

It’s free, it’s functional, and it allows you to do some things that the Froyo launcher won’t.

you don't have to have your apps in a folder before you add it to a button. Just open the folder, go to a different homescreen and drag an app from one homescreen to the homescreen with the open folder and just drop it in the window

you should have a look launcher pro beta. Very similar app but has the helicopter view like in Sense.

What keyboard are you using? I need a replacement for the Hero that has the mic, I tried uber keyboard and didn't like it. Any suggestions would be appreciated..

I tried this out and it's really good, but I like Launcher Pro Beta better than this. Launcher pro is really fast and it gives you pinch to zoom view of all homescreens. I don't like the functionality of having to swipe up to see the 6 launcher icons with ADW.

John, set it as your default launcher and when you hit the home button you will see all screens like sense preview. If you long click on the side dots you see only a preview of the screens corresponding to the dots.

I used it with my Sprint Hero running Android 2.1 and its pretty good, a little slow, with like 6 icons on all 5 screen so i cant imagine if i put all my widgets and icons on 7 screens on this thing. I suggest only using it if you have like a Droid, or something more powerful then the Hero. Other then the speed, its great! Great customization and great features. I love the 3D app drawer. Also it just looks good, but since its slow with so little apps on screens, im just ganna use Sense, kinda funny that Sense probably uses more power and is larger yet on my Hero, its wonderful and all 7 screen are full with widgets and everything, i love my Hero with the updated Sense! ADW is wonderful too, but not on a low spec phone.

awesome review. glad replacements like this exist cause i love the look of froyo but would rather have something like dialer one instead of the default phone in the dock.
