Latest HTC Hero 2.1 ROM leak [with how-to video]
Let’s start by saying, this is not officially official. I wouldn’t consider any ROM to be official unless I saw it on the Sprint support site. Regardless, that didn’t stop me from giving it a go. Keep in mind that this is one of those “use at your own risk” scenarios. DroidDog is not responsible for anything that happens to your phone. Now that I have that out of the way…
The update is fairly simple. The hardest part was finding a Windows PC that was in working order. The update will delete EVERYTHING on your phone. I recommend syncing everything to Google, or backing it up to your microSD card. There are plenty of apps in the Market to help with this. You won’t be able to backup some apps, as they are copy protected. Don’t worry too much. All apps should be available in the Market, once you’re back up and running. Someone mentioned that the ROM has not been signed by Google yet, so some apps may not show up in the Market right away.
Here are the basic steps:
- Backup all of your data, contacts, emails, etc
- Download and install HTC Sync (for USB drivers)
- Download and run the ROM
- Follow the on-screen instructions
- Enjoy Android 2.1

If you have a rooted hero, DO NOT USE THIS! It'll remove superuser so you can never flash a rom again.
Thanks for pointing that out. I forgot to mention it. Personally, I'm fine with losing root. Although I was never into flashing ROMs. I will miss device screenshots though.
Can i use this on the european Hero. like in norway??
There is a way to take screenshots without root access, I think…
yes, but you have to install the sdk and eclipse…or use home++
You can take screenshots by going into ddms I think….

If this version removes “Super User” is it safe to assume the Sprint upgrade, once sent to our phones, would remove “Super User” as well?

I would assume this the official version will. However, it probably won't take long for someone to find a new root solution.
I meant to say “screenshots from the device”. Yes, you can take screenshots via the Android SDK using DDMS. I beta test a lot of apps. I need screenshot access on the go, when an issue occurs. I'm sure someone will have a root solution soon.
Does bluetooth file transfer work now?

I can’t seem to find where to turn off the password unlock. I don’t want to have to enter that ever time.
If you have a stock, unrooted Hero like I do, no email contacts, and only one app (TasKiller) which can easily be deleted beforehand, what will happen if you want to root again.
My Question is has anyone every tried this update with a another device like a G1 or Something just to see if it would work?
So, fun fact I found while playing with my recently updated hero. If you now click on the settings button on the sense keyboard, there's a new setting added for the user dictionary. It's awesome. You can now delete individual words (for when you add something by accident), and even add words right from the setting.

I'm trying to do the install from a VMWare version of WinXP on my MacBook, but it keeps erroring out. Would this be a VMWare problem?

Man I so want to do this, but I will be the one schmuck that bricks my phone. I hope sprint releases the official version sometime this week.
I loaded this on my phone about 24 hours ago. At first it was all smooth sailing, but as I worked with the update I've noticed I've taken a BIG HIT when it comes to battery life. Also, the keyboard is kind of buggy. If you try to type the work “I'm” it will lock up the keyboard and make the touch application force close. Very strange.
I'm hoping Sprint's official release will fix some of these issues and give us all a more stable Hero device.

It works just fine I do love 2.1 update. Only one problem so far, it stays awake all time and it consumed a lot of battery. Any help on how to make it go to sleep when the screen turns off?
Are you on WiFi? Check your WiFi sleep policy.
MENU>Settings>Wireless & networks>Turn WiFi on>WiFi settings>MENU>Advanced>WiFi sleep policy

Most likely you'll have to wait for a root solution for the Hero 2.1 ROM. Once that's available, you'll be able to flash any ROM to the phone.
