New app licensing from Google

In response to developers’ complaints of unauthorized usage of their wares, Google has set up a licensing service, by which – via a set of libraries – an application can hit Google’s server, which stores sales records. Every time an app with this protection is launched, it checks with Google to be sure the copy is legit.

The new system will replace the old copy protection method within the next few months, and should be more secure and less problematic. Read more over at the Android Developers Blog.

Great. A new age is upon us... the age of apps that break anytime you can't get service. It happens a lot in the mountains around here.

Erm... How would programs handle the Google Cloud not being available when they want to check? I don't want my apps to die on me when I'm overseas and refusing to pay for roaming data usage... (Or down at the South Pole where there is no cell or Wi-Fi coverage...)

This will be hacked/cracked, no doubt, but I'm extremely happy Google is doing something about this. I'm sure it will stop most casual pirating. This was probably due to pressure from one or more of their business partners. ;-)

interesting, but what about those of us with shitty data plans? I don't want apps to waste my battery life pinging the google servers needlessly.before they roll this out I also reckon they need to fix the Market so that all regions can see all apps. I've had to borrow my friend's Nexus one to buy a few live wallpapers that I just couldn't see on my Milestone.

crap. no more ..borrowing..apps?

i wonder how the crackers at DroidAppz are going to take this now. but i think such a move might slow down the application response time and this if not done well will impede productivity.
