Samsung releases Captivate source code

The Galaxy S series represents a big turnaround for Samsung. After some unfortunate mistakes and less than stellar receptions of previous Androids, Samsung has found their footing and are pushing hard. Not only are the Galaxy S phones a collective powerhouse on the Android scene, Samsung in releasing source code for the devices in order to ensure they are embraced and built upon by the development community.

After opening up the source for the international version of Galaxy S, the AT&T flavor of the phone – Captivate – has also been set free. Get ready for custom ROMs that allow side loading on your Captivate, not to mention Captivate-based ROMs for other devices.

Is this the same as the code released for the EU Galaxy S? ie all of the code except for all the encrypted hardware drivers.Or does anyone know if this is the complete codebase, which will hopefully mean we'll start getting custom ROM's as well as ROM's built only on samsung releases?

Will this be any help to us T-Mobile folks using the Vibrant - or will mods made from this source be Captivate specific. (Sorry in advance for the noob-ish question!)

Eagerly awaiting to see the Galaxy S wreck benchmarks with Cyanogen 6!

Very, Very, Good move. Even though I am too noob to understand most of the source code.

Good to see! I have a feeling that these Galaxy S phones are going to be under very heavy development.

I'm sorry, but you are missing something here. Samsung released the source for the Behold 2, and all of the other devices they refuse to update. They are bound by the GPL to release the source. They have not released the drivers in the past however, and that was the major hold up for custom ROM's in the past. Downloading it at a snail's pace now to verify if they are in there or not.
