Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 rooted at last
It’s been a long wait – at least in a time when phones are often hacked before release – but the XPERIA X10 has finally given up root access, thanks, of course, to folks at xda-developers. It looks like rooters are running into issues here and there, but overall, the solution is a pretty simple process with some minor differences depending if the subject is an X10a or X10i.
It seems to me that the phone’s greatest weakness – in the eyes of Android fanatics, anyway – is the age and state of its operating system, Android 1.6. Perhaps now, hackers will find enough reasons to get an Eclair or Froyo ROM cooked up for the device. It would be great to see the community update SE’s custom UX, but I’m sure many an aspiring hacker/modder would be happy to see vanilla 2.2 or a Sense ROM on their own X10.
UPDATE: There is still some work to be done before a ROM can be flashed, but people are on it. [END UPDATE]
Follow the instructions at your own risk.

I thought the x10 had a locked bootloader (like the Droid X). Doesn't that mean that root apps are enabled with root, but you can't install custom ROMs?
Checking on this…
Please see the post update. From what I can tell, it is not locked down in the way that the Milestone/X bootloader is.
x10 shmx10 I've heard about the this phone so long that it's old and it still hasn't came out in the states….way to go sony
Thanks to X10's dismal battery life, rooting is highly recommended. Once you have rooted the handset, use SetCPU to underclock the processor when the screen is off.
Btw, full root seems to be damn close. The folks at X10 are already talking about porting cyanogen to the X10.
