Does anyone remember when Twidroid was Twitroid? Well, one of the best Android Twitter clients out their has undergone yet another name change; again, the pronunciation remains the same after an adjustment in spelling. This time around, the switch up will protect the app’s new owners – TweetUp Inc. – from litigation regarding similarity to the droid name owned by Lucas Films.
TweetUp also acquired popurls, and the aggregate news and social information service will work together with Twidroyd “to test and refine [TweetUp's] platform for finding the world’s best tweeters.” TweetUp has already integrated their search algorithm into a number of high profile sites and will soon open a marketplace where users of Twitter can bid on search terms in order to drive up traffic to their individual accounts.
Twidroyd will be preinstalled on a wide range of upcoming Androids as the default Twitter client.

The company also announced that the application will be renamed Twidroyd in order to ensure minimal confusion with products from Lucas Films, trademark owner of the term “droid,” and will come standard on millions of upcoming Android phones from five of the leading handset manufacturers.
As part of the transaction, TweetUp, Inc. will also acquire popurls®, which aggregates in one location the most popular items from the New York Times, Twitter, Digg, Delicious, Reddit, YouTube, Flickr and other news and social media sites. Combined, Twidroid and popurls will provide TweetUp with a broad distribution network on which to test and refine its platform for finding the world’s best tweeters.
