Froyo running on the DROID X UPDATE

If you own a DROID X and you have been dying to get your hands on 2.2 for the device, your time has finally come. Thanks to three forums members over at MyDroidWorld, a ROM has been leaked for the device, which is fairly simple to install. Of course, you need to be rooted AND running a stock recovery to flash the build. Before I get into the instructions, just how popular is this thing? Right after posting Froyo for the DROID X, MDW saw 15,000 downloads like it was nothing. That combined with a very oddly timed DDOS attack means getting a hold of this ROM hasn’t been easy. Fear not though, there is mirrors enough to go around. Instructions are as follows:

1. Download the update.zip from above and place it on the root of your SD card. (Not in a folder)
2. Turn your phone off.
3. Boot into recovery but holding the Home key and Power at the same time.
4. When a triangle with exclamation mark appears, release buttons and press the Search key once.
5. Using the volume up/down switch, scroll down to “apply sdcard:update.zip.”
6. Once highlighted, press the camera button to apply the update.zip.
7. Your phone will work some magic and if finished correctly will say “Successful.”
8. Scroll back up to “Reboot system.”
9. You phone should now reboot running Android 2.2.

Here’s the update.zip file from a mirror provided by Android Police. I was able to download with no problem. If you should run into a logwrapper error during installation, look here for more details on how to take care of that. As always, what you do to your device is your choice and yours alone. For those of you out there using a DROID X, are you making the jump? Let us know in the comments how it works out!

UPDATE:

According to Engadget, Motorola is putting it out there that you should not install this update. For whatever reason, it may be in your best interest to listen. Just remember, what you do to your device is your choice, and no one other than yourself takes responsibility for what happens.

Downloaded and installed on my Droid X with no problems. You might want to fix that you NEED to have root access and custom recovery. My phone had neither and installed without any issues at all and works great.

  2. phone rocks. couldn't be happier

Maybe I'm falling behind on my droid X news. Does this mean that custom roms are becoming a possibility?
