Looking for a weekly nutshell of Android news? The Saturday Wrap is for you.
This has been quite the week for Android. “Back to school” time is officially here, and you know what that means: More fall leaks, handset releases, savings everywhere, and of course, the impending holiday season rumors begin. If you think this is a busy time for Android, just wait until November. For now though, let’s concentrate on the present. This week we have some great leaks and updates to talk about, as well as some amazing handsets on the brink of release. So without further ado, let’s get right into this:
Device news:
This week in device news, there wasn’t really one device that stole the show… it was more like one company. Samsung has been working overtime to make their Galaxy series devices the absolute top of the line. They have succeeded. The device(s) have been unlocked, put on sale, made available for pre-sale, DivX HD certified, rooted… Samsung Galaxy products alone have made the headlines near 20 times this past week. Quite impressive. Here’s the rest of the list:
Verizon’s Fascinate coming September 9th
Samsung Epic 4G; $199 Amazon pre-order now
Verizon Fascinate launch appears imminent

Software news:
When update news sits on the top of the stack in the software section of the Wrap, things just seem right. There’s been a couple of good updates here and there, along with some really great hacks, but nothing compares to Verizon finally pushing out Froyo to the DROID Incredible. This has been rumored time and time again, so finally see it happen, well let’s just say it’s nice. If you are using an Incredible and haven’t seen the update yet, fear not, it’s coming. In the meantime, here’s a healthy amount of reading to hold you over:
Motorola’s Android update plans
DROID 2 update
Backflip and Cliq XT get rooted
DROID Incredible lands a Froyo ROM
HTC EVO 4G with Froyo rooted
DROID 2 rooted
Orange: FroYo Android 2.2 update for HTC Desire “delayed”
App news:
The highlight of this weeks big app news isn’t so much about apps in the market, but more of apps to come. Some of you may remember the G2 ROM that was leaked earlier this week (if you don’t read up on it here). Well Andrew Steffy took it upon himself to extract the GAPPS from said ROM to see what he could find. The results were great. Not only did flashing the entire GAPPS package over a Cyanogen ROM work perfect, there was some new goodies inside. The best of which are related to the Google Voice app. There appears to be two new widgets for Google Voice coming soon: 1 for quick inbox access, and 1 settings widget. There’s no telling whether or not this was just a good time for Google to announce a new widget, or if T-mobile has something sneaky up their sleeve. Only time will tell.
Of course, there’s plenty of other great app news to catch up on this week as well; TweetDeck beta 5, the Firefox Fennec alpha release, and a simply amazing Google Earth update to name a few:
Google’s Licensing system defeated?
Google’s response to hacking of their app protection
Wattpad updates Android app
Gameloft’s Try & Buy for Android: how to
Videos and reviews:
Have you been looking for a good app in the Android Market to stream TV? If you’re willing to pay for it, soon enough. Bitbop for Android is a newer app to be released shortly that features streaming over all connections, plus the ability to download and watch later, for one low monthly fee ($10). Considering that the app is still in demo form, Bitbop is shaping up to be an excellent alternative to the other paid TV services. Look for more information on the app soon.
Marques was busy this week again putting out yet another amazing review you won’t wanna miss. This time around, he’s taking a look at AK Notepad. AKN is an extremely useful, well organized notepad app that is essential for jotting down quick thoughts to share or reference later. To get a good feel for the app, check out the review here, and download from the Market now.

Well everyone, that’s a Wrap! You may be caught up now, but by the time next week rolls around… well don’t expect things in the wide world of Android to slow down much. It’s only going to get better from here. This week, I will leave you all with two great posts to read more into, one fun and one informative. The fun piece comes to us in the form of an advertising campaign for the Logitech Revue. Personally, I love it. Last but not least, the informative piece to check out comes from John and is about his “24 hours on the EVO power plan.” Alright guys, thanks for reading, and I’ll see you next week. Enjoy!
