When GetJar announced the download stats on Angry Birds this weekend, the numbers were certainly impressive: “1M+ downloads first day.” Now that day two has passed, and those numbers are available, you can add another 1 million to the download count. For a game on Android, these numbers are staggering, but how about for a game in general? Let’s put this into perspective:
Throughout the month of September, Halo Reach for Xbox 360 sold roughly 3.3 million copies. The game released on September 14th, so that means on average, around 200,00 copies a day were sold. In it’s first day of release, 4.7 million copies of Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 were sold in North America and the UK alone. Now I understand the difference between a $60 console release and a free game from the Android Market, but I also understand the similarities. If this a sign of things to come in the gaming community, I welcome it with open arms.
So how about it, have you spent some quality time with the Birds yet? If not, I highly recommend you do so.
