8pen keyboard replacement for Android

Those of you that are frustrated with the current state of the Swype keyboard beta should keep your eyes open for a new alternative that launches for Android 2.2 devices tomorrow. It’s called 8pen, and it presents a new take on text input that may or may not be faster than current revolutionary alternatives like Swype. The keyboard consists of a circle surrounded by four regions, which feature letters on each side of the region. Dragging the circle into a region selects it as a starting point, and travelling through other regions scrolls through the letters of your starting region for selection.

The idea here is that it is more comfortable than a typical QWERTY reproduction, but will it be faster or easier to use? I have a feeling it’s going to take some getting used to before anyone can answer those questions. Check it out:

I like the concept. I dont like the fact that I cant see the small letters under my finger and i cant lift my finger to see. Also, without a screen protector I find it hard to get a fluid motion dragging my finger across the screen without it coming to a halt.

THIS IS TOO MUCH. I like the stock keyboard on my EVO!

I work at Best Buy Mobile and I spent 5 hours playing around with this so I could teach it to customers. Impossible. Stick with your Swype, kids.

Wow! just tried this out and we are talking about a 6-8 month learning curve. With Swype you can just go but this, you gotta look for EVERY letter! I'll keep my other keyboards for regular usage and when i feel like struggling, i'll pull out the crafty 8pen keyboard.

In my opinion this is just like T9: If you get used to it you can type incredibly fast; i didn't get used to T9 because it was always to "abstract" for me, and i think it would be the same thing with 8pen. I can only type fast on a full keyboard, no matter physical or virtual. I also think that it's a matter of getting used to and I am writing so little SMS on my T9 kb-equipped phone, i don't really know which letters are on which keys when typing, but on a full-sized keyboard I know it because i'm seeing it more often.

I don't have swype (missed the beta) so I will definitely give this a shot. Though the keyboard isn't awful, it's small on my Eris, so maybe this'll be just what I needed?

I liked being able to type without looking with a hard T9. This may be the solution, tough transition though.

It seems like it would take much longer to create a letter than to simply tap it. Swiftkey is my keyboard of choice. Definite learning curve, but it predicts amazingly well. I often don't have to type anything but the first letter/word of a sentence now.

Swype works for me with no problems, so I don't think I'll be changing to this. I was using Swype within seconds of downloading it, yet this looks far too complicated. It looks like they have re-invented it for the sake of it. I was trying to think what it reminded me of - an Ipod Classic click-wheel!

I don't know what to think of it. Is it made by Google or a 3rd party? I guess I'll find out tomorrow when it's available for download on my G2...

this is WAYYY to complicated!

I think you're being too hard on 8pen, Carlos. After 6 or 7 months of full time training, it should feel just as natural as Swype or a standard kb.

And they say Americans don't "do" sarcasm... ;-)

it will take a while to learn, but once learned the advantage is "truly blind typing."

This looks much more intuitve than Swype! I can't wait to download this. If it works it will replace my current keyboard. Looks like the Nexus One symbol btw

actually its not that complicated and im one of those peope who normally wont be able to do complicated things lol ima try this out!!! looks good
