This is the first application I’m reviewing for DroidDog that requires root access, but I think it’s so handy that it’s worth sharing for those of you who have already rooted your Android devices. As the name implies, this is an application that reboots your phone or tablet… Except not quite.
To be quite honest there wouldn’t be much of a point to an application that simply reboots your Android device. Most phones out there take upwards of 30 seconds to completely reboot and reload everything that needs to run in the background for your phone to work properly again. Some tablets have an even longer reboot time. We Android users sometimes actually need to reboot our phones, whether there’s a glitch application or a nonworking widget or something else that requires a restart to begin working. Some applications require a restart after an update that keeps them functioning properly. Why wait for your phone to actually reboot?
Hot reboot, as the name implies, will quickly restart your device, more than twice as fast as normal. This is because Hot reboot restarts only the Android graphical shell. You can hot reboot with stock rooted Android or most custom ROMs.
Skeptical? I ran a few tests on my original Motorola Droid overclocked to 800MHz running Cyanogenmod 6.0 and got the below results. I used the same stopwatch timer for both methods and stopped the clock when the ‘Preparing SD card’ notification disappeared, indicating that the phone is fully usable.
Hot reboot: 0:24
That’s roughly a 400% improvement in reboot time! If you don’t believe me you can check it out yourself by scanning the QR code at the beginning of this article.
Included with the application are several widgets, a pair for a normal reboot and a pair for Hot reboot. These are useful if you find yourself testing a lot of new, buggy or unstable applications or are developing your own application and need a way to quickly reboot the Android graphical shell. I wouldn’t put this on your main homescreen though, as you could press it accidentally or pocket reboot, which could get annoying.
All this comes at a price of just 0.50 Euros, which translates to about $0.68 cents.
