Qualcomm to bring Netflix to Android

In a world where your Marvells, Samsungs, TIs, and Tegras have all essentially caught up to each other, it’s easy to push who’s manufacturing your Android device’s processor to the back of your head. Realistically, the differences in performance throughout the newest crop of Android processors are barely noticeable. What’s really going to change your mobile experience is based more on the content your processor powers. Well what if that content was dictated by which processor you were using?

“Qualcomm is in a unique position to help bring the most optimized and advanced Android apps to market through working closely with the strong ecosystem of Snapdragon developers like Netflix. Snapdragon processors are designed to deliver dynamic performance and media protection features in a turnkey package, allowing the devices they power to more easily pass through the approval process required for Netflix certification.”

Yes, you read that right. With the help of Qualcomm, it looks like Netflix will finally be hitting Android — And quite possibly only on devices using Snapdragon processors too. It’s been said before that the reason for Netflix’s delayed arrival on Android is due to security issues. Qualcomm looks to be making a brilliant move here by designing hardware that will pass Netflix’s security measures. Other manufacturers may have already taken a cue from Qualcomm, meaning they have their own Netflix certifiable internals in the making, but for now it looks like Netflix on Android is going to be a Snapdragon exclusive.

We’ll be sure to keep an ear to the ground as this continues to develop.
