It’s been quite a long time since we last heard anything on the next major version of Android to be released, but today Google coder @RomainGuy has dropped a bombshell confirming the long rumored name for the update: Ice Cream Sandwich.
While there’s still no software number, be it 3.x or 4.x, attached to Ice Cream Sandwich, on a Google code issue, Romain Guy said the issue that was reviewed will be fixed in Ice Cream Sandwich, and that it was already fixed internally.
It’s long been said that the next version of Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS) would include elements of both Honeycomb and Gingerbread to create a user friendly OS across phones and tablets. The issue that brought about the mention of ICS was related to Honeycomb, so we know for sure that it will be headed to tablets some point in the near future. As for when and what makes its way to phones, we’ll just have to wait and find out.
