Google announced today the availability of a new version of Google Earth for Android devices running version 2.1 or higher of the operating system. But the most exciting aspects of the release will be evident only to tablet owners running Android 3.0 or above. Google Earth has now been fully optimized to take advantage of the larger displays found in tablets, and of the astounding processing power now available in mobile devices.
Using the action bar, users can add numerous layers to their view, including photos from Panaramio, Google Places, Wikipedia entries and fully textured 3D buildings. Not to mention that users can fly to a location with all of these layers enabled. The author of the announcement post, Peter Birch, says that going from a phone to a tablet with Google Earth was like, “going from a regular movie theatre to IMAX.”
