Samsung Infuse 4G: first impressions

We generally like to introduce a new device in our arsenal with a video unboxing and then follow up with photo/video samples, a full, written review, and possibly some Q&A vids. But we don’t want to hold out on content while taking care of some glitches in our video editing department, so here is our first still photo unboxing and first impressions post.

The good folks at Samsung have hooked DroidDog up with AT&T’s Infuse 4G–a ~9mm thin slab that feels as nice in the hand as it looks in these photos. The device features Android 2.2, a 1.2GHz processor, and a stunning 4.5″ Super AMOLED Plus display at 480 X 800 pixels. Did I mention that it’s stunning? The primary camera is 8MP with LED flash and 720p video capture, and the front-facing cam is 1.3MP.

In the box: Infuse 4G, USB-to-Micro-USB cable, AC adaptor, MHL adaptor for running video from the Micro USB out to an HDMI cable (also provides another Micro USB connect for power), Micro SD card reader, manuals, and a $25 credit with Samsung Hub.

AT&T started selling the HSPA+ powered Infuse 4G for $200 on a two year contract and $549 outright on May 15th. The specs are in sync with the current top-of-the-line Android standard, but this one definitely has a flavor of it’s own. The phone is thin but large. To really appreciate the device, you must hold one in your hand.

Here it is alongside some comps:

Pictured: HTC’s Thunderbolt 4G (VZW), The Samsung Charge (VZW) and Sammy’s Infuse 4G (AT&T).

The Infuse 4G runs Android 2.2.1 with a very AT&T flavor of Samsung’s TouchWiz UI on top. By that I mean hues of blue framed by white/off-white and gray. Little splashes of sea foam green and purple keep the soft, soothing interface interesting.

Everything about the device gives off a distinguished, expensive vibe. The phone is wrapped in a gunmetal edge, with a luscious display on top and a delicately textured battery cover on back. The display is drool-worthy. Samsung’s software has retained the very best innovations we’ve seen in their Android journey, and lost those bits we didn’t like. The hard and software combination, at first blush, is very impressive. Everything about the Infuse 4G screams refinement. This is clearly a gadget for the discerning consumer.

Keep an eye on DroidDog for our full written review, coming soon.
