Android Market now includes video rentals, book purchases, other improvements

U.S. owners of an Android 2.2 (or higher) device have cause to celebrate today. Google has released the latest version of their Market app, and the update is significant. We’re not just talking about UI enhancements or performance optimizations here, though both have been addressed: the Android Market now features movie rentals complete with the ability to download videos for offline viewing (Videos app required), book purchases, and new methods of discovering applications.

Your Market home page will offer more charts, room for additional featured items, and even staff picks and editor choices.

The new Market app will be making its way to customers around the world in the coming weeks, but the movie and book functions are for U.S. only customers…at least for the time being.
