Research In Motion sponsoring 50 developer meetups to promote Android apps on the BlackBerry PlayBook

One of the bullet points for Research In Motion’s BlackBerry PlayBook, the company’s very first tablet device, is that they have always planned on running Android applications on it. That’s great for those developers out there who want to keep their development model strictly Android, but wouldn’t mind promoting their applications in other markets. To bolster support for the initiative, RIM is sponsoring 50 developer meetups across the country, to which they hope will bring plenty of attention to the Android application port cause.

The Android Player for PlayBook has been rumored to be landing on PlayBooks with the next major update to the QNX Software that runs the tablet, which should be version 2.0. As for a specific date as to when that’s actually landing on the tablet, that’s anyone’s guess at this point. But with the push for Android development support so obvious from the company, it would be logical to assume that they are trying to get it out soon. As of this writing, they have 35 meetups listed on their official site, so it looks like there is at least some interest in the endeavor.
