Despite the fact that phones featuring a Facebook button have already been released, and feature HTC branding, it looks like rumors of an actual Facebook phone just won’t go away. It cropped up again when AllThingsD apparently got in touch with a Facebook spokesperson, who seemed pretty candid on the subject.
And yes, as you may have imagined, the phone will feature Android under the hood, but it will be heavily modified. It is reportedly codenamed “Buffy,” and it will indeed be manufactured by HTC. There aren’t many details to go along with here, but here’s what the spokesperson had to say:
“Our mobile strategy is simple: We think every mobile device is better if it is deeply social,” a Facebook spokesperson told AllThingsD. “We’re working across the entire mobile industry; with operators, hardware manufacturers, OS providers, and application developers to bring powerful social experiences to more people around the world.”
Take it for what it’s worth, but it looks like a true-blue Facebook phone is indeed on its way down the pipe. There’s just no telling when we’ll finally see it, or what it will look like.
