Samsung Epic 4G for Sprint receiving the Gingerbread update today

Thanks to the Sprint forums, owners of the Samsung Epic 4G have some reason to rejoice today. While other phones on the market have already received their update to Android 2.3, the Epic 4G has yet to get it. But that wait is finally over. It has been revealed that the update to Android 2.3 is now being pushed out to handsets starting today.

The update is build number EI22 (S:D700.0.5S.EI22), and it has plenty of improvements, as well as the regular goodies associated with the update to Gingerbread. Here’s what you’re looking at:

  • Audible Sprint AIRAVE notifications when answering call
  • Upgrade of the Google OS from Froyo to Gingerbread
  • SMS messages sent without area code
  • PRL and profile update
  • Bluetooth headset sound improvements
  • Fully visible date on device lock screen
  • EAS (Exchange Activesync) email displaying HTML

As usual, Sprint is releasing the Gingerbread update in stages, but says that all Epic 4G owners should be upgraded by November 10th. Let us know in the comments below how the update goes for you, and how your phone works after you update.

do NOT do this update do NOT accept the "over the air" push install for Gingerbread for the Epic 4G i am sitting here watching my phone restart repeatedly, and it's been over an hour:  the splash screen repeatedly shows the S and the 4g yellow block graphic my phone is now bricked, most definitely, at the hand of Sprint unbelievable

I could not get the update. I took my phone to Sprint and they told me that this phone is not getting this update, that next month, ICS (Ice Cream Sandwich) will be the software update that we will get for this phone. Currently, I still have Froyo. I tried to update my Firmware and PRL and Profile update, because they gave me brand new phone on the spot. Unfortunately, I did not get the update. Now that I can do updates. my phone tells me that I have no updates. That said, I am disappointed. For those who gave it, good for you, and those that dont, oh well....... BBBBBOOOOOO!!!!!!!

Gosh, it sounds like I cant speak, I promise I can, Im just tired... forgive the mistakes, I usually proofread before I send, but as I said, I am tired. I think you pretty much get what I am saying. email me if you have any questions myricknsa@gmail.com. I will only respond to intelligent/legitimate questions/comments.

Got my update, but it won't start back up. It keeps rebooting itself. Any suggestions on how to fix?

this is probably the reason why I am not getting mine, I think it doesnt work for this phone :-(

Same problem & I was prompted by Spring to update.

Since this is a Galaxy S  phone...will this prompt T-Mobile and the other carriers to FINALLY release it for the Vibrant, Captivate and [name escapes me atm]!!!!  ????? Is there hope for the rest of us?

Its the 10th and no Gingerbread update for me

I doubt we will get the update, no one so far has said that actually got the OTA (over the air) update. Those who "hack" their phone got it, but it isnt the same version. Its similar but not the same. I would rather not do that to my phone, because if something happens during the "overlay" I void my warranty and Sprint wont fix it. I will have to come out of my pocket for a new phone full price..... ha! NO THANKS

if you turn on your background data and manually do it by going to settings>about phone>then update android it showed up for me

If this happens I wont be getting the SAMSUNG GALAXY S 2 EPIC TOUCH 4G.

I'm very happy to hear about the update, but I wonder when I will see on my phone, cause this is not the first announcement for this update.
