EFF to Android community: Help us, Help you

Yes, another Carrier IQ story, just when you thought the drama was over. Well it isn’t, trust us. The latest development is, however, both refreshing and invigorating. The Electronic Frontier Foundation, a non-profit organization that organizes legal opposition to the violation of electronic rights, has been hard at work trying to reverse engineer Carrier IQ’s metric software. What’s great about this process is that they want YOU to help them out! How? Well pull up a chair and lend an ear ladies and gents…

EFF volunteer Jared Wierzbicki wrote a program for parsing Carrier IQ profiles. His program, aptly entitled IQIQ, translates the encoded Carrier IQ profile information into readable XML. They’re asking for your help in sharing what type of information is stored in your profile so they can accurately determine what data is being captured. They also point out that there may be other factors that have corrupted the metric software over time on individual phones. Ultimately, they just want to get to the bottom of this issue that has been plaguing the community for the past months. So, let’s show them what we’re made of and get this train moving!
