This past weekend was a big one for the Suwon-based consumer electronics manufacturer Samsung. They announced that they had reached the milestone 300 million global handsets sold. The Korean company recently saw a sharp increase in sales largely due to its Android offering, the Galaxy S II which set a new record by hitting 10 million units faster than any other device in the company’s history.
Of course, Android isn’t the only factor driving those sales numbers. Samsung’s own Bada OS phones have been selling like hotcakes and have surpassed the Windows Phone in global market share. Even with its success, there’s always a bigger dog in the yard and that big dog is HTC. A recent Nielsen report showed that HTC still holds the title in terms of percentage of usage in the community, but what will happen in 2012 is still up in the air. With manufacturers like ZTE, Huawei, and Sony ramping up their smartphone game competition will be much stiffer for the likes of Samsung and HTC.
