Xiaomi may have leaked the name of their next superphone
It looks like the next phone from Xiaomi may not be just a rumor after all. (Or it still could be.) That is, unless Xiaomi loves the rumor mill just as much as everyone else — and get a kick out of stoking the fire, too. We received word this morning that Giz-China, the source of the original leak regarding the Xiaomi M2, had actually received word from Xiaomi offering up what could be the name of the next superphone: MI-2. It’s pretty close to the name that we saw in the original report, but obviously it isn’t the same.
In the report, Giz-China says that Xiaomi reached out to them on Twitter, and asked them what they thought of the MI-2. They tease that the phone could be a tease created by some Mi fans, but then allude to the fact that it could be more by offering up the device’s name. A name that Giz-China didn’t use in their original article, which is why the sirens are going off. Here’s the tweet in question:
“@Gizchina:Haha some concepts from Mi fans or maybe…..! what is you guys’ ideas about MI-2?”
If the MI-2 is indeed a real device, here’s what we’re looking at:
- A 4.6-inch capacitive touchscreen display
- 2.5GHz processor
- 2.5GB of RAM
- 32GB of storage
- 12MP rear-facing camera
- 5MP front-facing camera
- Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich
- A rumored price of 2499 Yuan, or about $394
Obviously the specifications are ridiculous, but if Xiaomi is getting ready to release a phone of that magnitude, and with a price tag that low, the global phone market will indeed feel the waves. We’ll have to keep our fingers crossed that this pans out in the right way.
