While smartphones have mostly taken over the PMP market, there are still a few people who like personal media players. Cowon wants to help those people, and has released the Z2 Plenue in South Korea. The device features mid-range specs, including a 3.7-inch AMOLED display with a resolution of 800×480, a 1GHz processor, 1GB of RAM, and storage options ranging from 8 to 32GB. A microSD card slot is also on board, but the Android version is unknown.
The question is whether PMPs are still popular, or headed the way of the dinosaurs. In the US they are definitely losing traction, and Android-based PMPs were never very popular here in the first place. That may be different in South Korea, where the Z2 Plenue is being sold. The price varies from $230 for the 8GB variant, up to $300 for the 32GB version. On par with others, but not exactly budget. Are PMPs still relevant? Are they a thing of the past?
