LG Electronics announced to the Korea Herald this morning that they have no immediate plans to introduce any more Windows Phone devices. Instead, LG has decided to go all-in and focus on Android for future smartphone releases as suggested during the first quarter 2012 earnings call. Noting the slow sales of Windows Phone, LG says the market just isn’t large enough to be a factor:
“The total unit of Windows Phone sold in the global market is not a meaningful figure.”
LG claims the relationship between it and Microsoft remains on good standing and they will “continue research and development efforts” for the Windows Phone platform.
While LG managed to turn a profit in the first quarter of 2012, the company had lost money the previous few quarters and can’t afford to back a slow growing platform. LG is clearly looking to increase their margins and as Windows Phone isn’t delivering big numbers, then their decision should come as little surprise.
Anyone happy to see LG refocused on Android or are Samsung, Motorola, and HTC doing well enough?
