Toshiba has officially announced the release of a trio of new tablets, ranging from 7.7 inches to a ridiculously large 13.3 inch tablet, all utilizing the “Excite” name. The three tablets have a bit in common, notably their Tegra 3 processor, 5 megapixel rear camera, 2 megapixel front-facing camera, Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich operating system and Gorilla Glass screens. So what distinguishes them?
- Excite 7.7: 1280×800 resolution screen, 0.3 inches thick, 13.4 ounces, available in June for $499.99 for 16GB, $579 for 32GB
- Excite 10.1: 1280×800 resolution, 0.35 inches thick, weighs 1.32 pounds, available in May for $449 for 16GB and $529 for 32GB
- Excite 13.3: comes with a 13.3″ AutoBrite LED display at 1600×900 resolution, 0.4 inches thick and weighs 2.2 pounds, available in June for $649 for 32GB and $749 for 64GB
Having already seen the devices in action at Mobile World Congress and in the wild after that, we’re not exactly seeing these tablets for the first time. However, we’re still asking, what is Toshiba thinking with a 13.3″ tablet? Especially when the Google Play market is struggling to fill apps for a 10″ screen, never mind something larger. Will Toshiba’s tablet line compete in the crowded Android tablet market? That’s tough to say and it’s more likely that the 13.3″ tablet will be something people stop to play with on store shelves not run out and purchase. Still, we’re hopeful Toshiba is introducing something sleek and “new” into the Android tablet market and we wish them the best of luck. All 3 of them.
