Flipboard for Android Review [Video]

Now that the download of Flipboard for Android is now unofficially available for anyone to try, let’s take a deeper video look a the application!

The app is definitely nice! Eye candy is there, smooth animations are present and functionality is maintained from the iOS counterpart. There’s also a Flipboard widget that was not covered in the video, which allows you to view your most recent cover photos in a 2×4 widescreen view.

Overall Flipboard is yet another on the list of previously iOS-exclusive applications that have made their way over to Google’s mobile platform. Who’s next?

Now please make it for tablets. Hopefully a tablet version is already on the roadmap.

Did you flash your nexus? If so which Rom?

RaienDrops That's definitely not stock ICS, looks much like AOKP to me.

RaienDrops it is AOKP the battery icon and the customized carrier label can say, he just has golauncher on their or something

omararod More likely Nova Launcher, it's mostly like the stock ICS launcher, but you can sort the app tray for "new apps" and "downloaded" etc. and you can change the icons with that too. Also, you can disable the persistent searchbar and place it as a sizeable widget, like MKB seems to have done.

It comes preloaded with AOKP, I had it on my Desire too, till I realized ICS was still too buggy for me on that one.

Can someone explain how this is better than google news? Looks like it would take forever to see the news. It's like the whole stupid app is built around one dumb animation. No thanks.

nathan118 I think it's interface is better than Pulse or Google Currents. In fact I don't really like Pulse anymore. I'm gonna be using this and Current from now on though.

@ClarkKent113 but for consuming news, it seems like form over function. How is this better than CNN, or drudge, or even the news/weather widget?

nathan118 Buddy this is one of those apps that look flashy and can be easily mistaken as a gimmick. You have to actually try it out to believe its usefulness. Flipboard is the best way of consuming your twitter, facebok and google reader feeds. Its fast slick and gorgeous. Cheers.

@iam_beast I did try it. How is it better than google reader?

DistortedLoop 5 pts

iam_beast I have to disagree, at least in terms of making Google Reader feed more readable.  Maybe I didn't play with it enough, but my test of it it totally ignores folders and dumps everything into one timeline.  If you use GoogleTV or Google Listen these use Reader to manage your audio/video RSS feeds.  Flipboard dumps all of those right into the feed along with text based feeds, making you have to scroll through all your podcasts to see your other feeds, even though you wouldn't use flipboard to listen to them.

Also there doesn't appear to be a way to mark as read without actually opening the article.  In the Reader app you can skim the headlines, read what interests you, skip what doesn't, mark all as read so they don't show up again.

@DistortedLoop yes, that is very true. It is of no good use for power users. I have a couple of google reader accounts, one i use for keeping track of the important feeds(this includes a lot of news sources, podcasts...) and the other i use to keep track of the blogs i like to read for recreation's sake. Flipboard does a great job at curating the feeds in a visually pleasing manner. You are absolutely right about google reader being the choice or power users, but flipboard is pretty awesome if you want to just relax and have a well curated magazine to read. Dont you think?
