Although not official, reports are saying Amazon has acquired the 3D-mapping startup UpNext for $2.5 million. This transaction would “give Amazon the startup’s 3D, Android-native maps of 50 US cities, complete with navigation and extra information about notable buildings”. Currently, the Kindle Fire is not part of the Android ecosystem so 3D-mapping will take some work.
Will Kindle Maps be next? No statements have come from either company yet, but it looks like Amazon could very well be joining the likes of Apple, Google, and Nokia/Microsoft in the mapping market.
