Court Documents Reveal That Samsung Is Planning An 11.8″ Tablet With ‘Retina’ Display

After Apple launched the new iPad this year, other tablet manufacturers have been trying to cram more pixels into their devices screens to compete. It looks like Samsung is planning to follow that trend as new court documents show that Samsung is working on an 11.8″ tablet with 4G LTE connectivity and a WQXGA resolution display. That’s a measure of 2560×1600 pixels. If that sounds like a lot then it is as that brings the PPI count to 256. This isn’t the first time that we’ve heard a rumor like this as they surfaced earlier in the year. There’s no mention of a release date though Samsung is hosting a ‘Newest Galaxy’ event next month and this could be the star of the show along with the Galaxy Note 10.1. Would you guys pick up an 11.8″ tablet like this if it came out on the market?

Nick Sarafolean, please fix the terminology in your article. The term "Retina" is not synonymous with HD. Just because Samsung might be making an HD tablet, no credit should be given to Apple's screen, as they have NOTHING to do with it.

Doesn't Samsung supply the "Retina Display" for Apple? So how do you credit them for inventing it? I was reading an article about Apple inventing the touch screen and wondered why my Kyocera phone back in the 90's didn't count as touch screen. Apple invents hardly anything but creatively markets and patents everything.....

Retina Display is a marketing jargon by Apple as is HD, True HD etc., is for any other devices with screens. Can we please not give Apple credit and refer to other products that have higher ppi density as 'retina display.' This is the natural progression of cell phones better/higher specs and a trend.

Can we please have this with stock Jelly Bean? Oh wait...

The thing that puzzles me is that retina is not a true form of HD yet Apple highly pushes that it is. Its a higher pixel density count. Its not True HD at all! My cellphone is 1/4 HD and I dont see any pixels. I compare it to the iphone and I dont see a difference. So when i had the iphone i was just paying for the name. So not worth the money. Especially the iPad, when I could have gotten an Asus :/

There's no such thing as a "Retina Display". It's nothing but marketing jargon. What resolution is the display Samsung working on?

Spoken Word As said in this article - "2560×1600 pixels".

Damn, I read through that so fast that I didn't even see that. Or maybe these 41 year old eyes need glasses. Either way, thanks JJ.

If this is true & they release something of that size, with Android OS, I'm definitely getting one for myself.

I can hear apple on the phone with their lawyers already.. lol

dtam054 Unfortunately, I was just thinking the same thing. "What do you mean Samsung is about to make a better product? We have to sue now!"

jkozan1788 5 pts

@Jasper @dtam054 The only problem is that apple does not own the rights to the display just the name it is not made by apple. Just checked it is produced by Samsung.

dtam054 There is nothing for Apple to sue for yet. It is the author of this article that used the term "Retina" for Samsung's HD display. It has nothing to do with Apple, nor is it actually a Retina display. It's just HD.
