Cydle Multipad M7 Now Called ‘Edifi’, Labeled As First ‘Christian’ Tablet

The Family Christian bookstore chain is trying something new by marketing a tablet to a specific group of individuals.  They are taking the Cydle Multipad M7 tablet, renaming it to Edifi, and marketing it as the world’s first ‘Christian’ tablet.

I’m guessing the Edifi will have a difficult time selling as most people will know its not an iDevice or a current Android device.  In fact, the Edifi sports 8GB storage, Android 2.3 Gingerbread(its been a while since I’ve posted that in an article), 512MB of RAM, and an antiquated 7″ 800×480 display.  The device will ship with a few apps geared for Believers including a Safe Search browser, YouVersion Bible application with 27 translations, and an application to listen to Christian Internet radio.  Take a look at the video below introducing you to the Edifi:

The Edifi will sell for  $149.99 and is available via the Family Christian website and at any of their 300 stores.

I have strong believes about my faith, but I’m not sure why I would purchase a “Christian” tablet over another tablet such as the Nexus 7.  Tell us your thoughts in the comments below

Wow, interesting. I am a Christian and I try to take my faith seriously. I don't like to be tempted by inappropriate stuff on the internet and I would like more apps to have stronger and more intelligent filtering. I am glad that the Google Play Store, Youtube, and the Internet browser have filters already. I would like to see that kind of thing continue and grow. Not that I would want to filter other people's experiences but I would like the ability to filter my own stuff.

For example, I would like to see some more controls in Netflix. I don't watch R rated movies and would like to be able to filter them all out. I like that they have created a kid friendly area; that is nice. But I would like more options for myself. For example...I don't want to see 'Horror' or "Gay stuff' in my Netflix. Why not let me filter it down to the stuff I actually like such as that crazy guy that goes to restaurants and eats up the biggest and hottest food ever?

While we're at it, why not add a Share function to Netflix? When I find a great show I would love to be able to share that with my family and best buds. Since we all have Netflix it shouldn't be a big deal right?

Don't get me wrong I love Netflix. I have never had cable tv because I feel it is over-priced, full of ads and shows I don't want to watch/support with my money. I always said that what I wanted was the ability to watch shows on demand, with captioning, at a reasonable price without ads. That is Netflix, no? So I'm not tearing down Netflix, just asking for some new features.

Oops...looks like I got a little off-topic. The Christian Slater device above....price seems reasonable but like you said it is behind in the specs....I don't want to be too negative about it because I want to encourage stuff like this. For me I think I would just buy a Nexus 7 and set it up to do the same stuff. Is there anything the Christian Slater can do that the Nexus 7 can't? I guess it can sell for less money but are there any apps or features that are exclusive to that device or can I just configure a Nexus 7 to do the same stuff? Maybe this would be a simple way to get something into a kid's hands that you wouldn't have to worry about and that would have Christian stuff that you support?

Here's another thought though....not all Christians believe exactly the same things. While all true Christians share core beliefs they may not agree on which internet radio to listen to or which version of the Bible to read, etc. It is that kind of thing that may truly limit the audience of a device like this. I see that the Bible app has a bunch of translations so you can pick what you want. But what if you are a Christian who doesn't support K-Love or the Family Christian Book store? For that kind of reason I think the scope of this product's audience is pretty limited.

Todd,

I agree with your ideas.  I would like more filters built into Netflix as well.  I understand that certain genres may appeal to various people, but I'd like to be able to turn on a filter and only view Genre's I know I would watch.

I'm not convinced this device will sell well.  I understand about using it for a child, but there are other "tablets" for kids out there such as Leapster and the Kurio.  Personally, I know once my Nexus 7 arrives I will be installing the Bible app and the K-Love app as those are two apps I use daily.

I think the biggest difference is the fact that with the Nexus 7 you are stuck with your internal memory with no chance to upgrade but with the edifi you can add a SD card up to 32 gigs. My biggest concern is upgrading the OS to 3 or 4.0.
