First Custom Roms for the Google Nexus 7

The Nexus 7 isn’t even available to the masses yet and it’s first custom roms are already appearing.  So far, the custom roms we’re seeing are just tweaked stock roms.  On the surface it will still be the new Jelly Bean just being awesome.  However, there will be a few tweaks underneath the hood that you may be interested in.  Below I have the new roms I’ve found for the nexus 7 and what the developers say is new.

Virtuous Grouper
“This is a pretty much stock build of Android 4.1 Jelly Bean with tweaks and optimization’s by the Virtuous Team.  Rom based on official Google system image for Nexus 7.”  The rom is also rooted and deodexed, which makes it nice for flashing tweaks later.  The rom “is designed for people who rely on their device 24/7 and are not looking for the latest and greatest features.”  Basically, it’s designed to be super usable.

KRAKD-7
“This is a fast and light ROM, designed to give you an awesome stock Jelly Bean experience while removing unneccessary cruft and making the device as nice to use as possible.”

Rom Features:

  • Deodexed
  • Zip aligned
  • Superflous apps removed
  • Rooted
  • init.d support
  • Busybox
  • Ad-blocking host file
  • Aroma installer
  • DSP Manager
  • Original Nexus 7 boot animation
  • Clean look
  • Awesome speed

So the KRAKD-7 rom has a few more things removed and added, but you can see they’re both basically the same idea so far with being streamlined, deodexed, and rooted.  The feature image for this post is a shot of the KRAKD-7 rom on the Nexus 7 from the XDA thread.  Links to the different threads are above the rom descriptions.  Be sure to give the developers a big thanks and support them for what they do.  It’s great to see some development being done on the unreleased Nexus 7 device and I’m really really excited to get mine in the mail.  What do you guys think of this rom news?  What custom features are you looking forward to seeing in custom roms?  Let us know what you think…
