Poll: Which Manufacturer Would You Choose To Produce The Next Nexus Phone?

Even though the Nexus 7 is still fresh off its release, it’s hard not to think about Google’s next self-branded device. We’ve seen Nexus smartphones from both HTC and Samsung, but will Google stay true to its partnership with the latter? Obviously, it’s still too early to tell, though I’d love to see another device like the Nexus One. I’ve owned the entire line of Nexus handsets, but the N1 still sits on my desk for spontaneous flashing and hacking.

The folks over at AndroidPolice brought up a great question, so I thought I’d post it here as well to spark some heated discussions. If you were in charge of Google’s Nexus division, who would you choose to be the manufacturer of the next Nexus? What would be your ideal specifications? Be sure to let us know in the comments below.

A lot of people seem to want to see a Motorola Nexus phone. My understanding is that Motorola builds good quality hardware. I'd love to give them a try if they can not include any bumps, protrusions, sharp pointy corners or other Moto-weirdness.

EVERYBODY... what are your speculations on timeline. They always release around Christmas. Do you think they will this year???

How about a company that remembers what a QWERTY keyboard is.

Since I have a Bionic, I would vote for Motorola getting the next attempt at a Nexus. Asus sounds interesting also. I have yet to have one from Sammy, but my last two experiences with HTC (ThunderBolt and TMO's HD2) ended with multiple replacements, so no HTC for me.

I'd like to see the manufacturer put a CPU in the same quad core family as the Transformer Prime tablet has, a 4.6-5.3" screen in AMOLED plus (or sub in whatever is the best type), maybe optional stylus, excellent sound via phone and speaker, 16GB internal memory and a SDXC to give us 64 GB more storage, and a big capacity battery (in line with Razr Maxx numbers). Throw in world phone capability as well. Mine would have to be VZW capable.

Let me know when mine is ready.  :-)

David Black  5.3 is WAY too big for a phone much less a Nexus phone which is a bench mark for what android should be. That is more for a Niche market.

I would wish it was HTC because of the build quality but now that Google inhaled Motorola, I think they should do their own hardware specifically designed for key lime pie (or whatever) to ensure project butter comes out right again

jaskfla 6 pts

Considering Google acquired Motorola Mobility, I think they should really just make their own hardware.

astontopgears 19 pts

I don't think Google should just limit us to one nexus phone. I'd like to see an array of devices from different manufacturers to give us some choices!

jaskfla 6 pts

astontopgears I think that defeats the whole purpose of having a Nexus phone, it would delay updates because new features would need to be optimized.

TheKockyRooster 8 pts

jaskfla Yes, Nexus is always the bar... pure and unadulterated.

Motorola, hands down. A RAZR running stock Android with an unlocked bootloader would be a dream come true. Add in a Tegra 4, LTE support for Verizon, the battery from the RAZR MAXX, and a microSD slot and I'd be sold. I've yet to get my hands on the Atrix HD and its ColorBoost display, but I've heard good things about it, so everything should be good on the display front.

Serotheo 12 pts

HTC preferably but I think it'd be interesting to see what Motorola would put out as well.

Motorola... Love the radio's the use in phones and the re are built well....

I would not mind another Samsung Nexus phone. I absolutely love my GNexus.  A return to HTC would also be awesome, but I definitely agree, with the others on here, I would love to see a Motorola Nexus phone. Though I've never liked their software, Ive always appreciated the build quality of their phones.

If HTC can resist spoiling Stock KLP (Key Lime Pie, or whatever it is gonna be next) with their "customizations" and whatnot then going with them would be a solid bet. They have some of the best hardware/build quality on the market right now and I'd like to see them get back into the game again. Also, they'd need to get with the program, follow Android design standards and have software buttons, but that's another story.

Matlock 12 pts

roboguy12 If HTC is chosen as the manufacturer of the next Nexus phone, then they wont have any control over the software. The software is stricttly controlled by Google.

roboguy12 31 pts

Matlock Very true, you are right. But still, I do hope they would include software buttons. Come to think of it, the presence of those horrible hardware buttons is what causes the major problem with that legacy menu button taking up space on the screen. Probably why they were supposed to be on-screen, so the menu button could appear as needed. Why would HTC even make them hardware anyway? But I'm getting off topic haha

Jf665 10 pts

@roboguy12 @Matlock I actually prefer the capacitive buttons. If u think about it the menu button takes up the same amount of space as the on screen buttons

Motorola, because while they don't always win in style or "thinness", in my experience, they have built some solid phones. Not to mention that Google acquired Motorola Mobility.

As of ICS and especially Jellybean, I've been hungry for the "vanilla" Android experience, but as long as it requires one of SAMSUNG' S chintzy feeling, plasticky devices, I'll continue to tolerate a custom UI or keep hoping for a custom ROM for a more tolerable device.

spectremANDROID The plastic on the Samsung devices are fine. It's a strong type of plastic and feels solid in the hand. To miss out on vanilla android that is stock and fast just like on my Gnex device you can miss out if you want. Are you looking for the phone to be made from Stainless steel? You can always buy the phone with an "i" and deal with broken glass.

Jf665 10 pts

@sanman202 @spectremANDROID but for a 500 dollar phone I would like to believe the phone cost at least more than 100 to build not $30. When I hold my evo lte next to the gnex or nexus s the evo just feels like it was built better

iFrenzy 6 pts

I'll second the anyone but samsung idea.  I've owned multiple samsung android phones and they've all had nothing but problems.  This includes the Samsung Moment, Samsung Intercept, Galaxy S Fascinate, Droid Charge, and Galaxy Nexus.  I went through EIGHT galaxy nexus phones all with the one way muting issue, and they finally let me have a Razr Maxx instead.  I had loads of other problems with all the others too.  This is on top of the fact that they all feel like plasticy junk.  How about hire someone to make the phone that knows what metal is.

thomasmfarrell 5 pts

I'd like to see one from Motorola, although I suspect Google won't do that because it'd piss off the competition. I'd like to see Asus make a phone, and my new HTC seems to have great build quality (and I really wish it had stock ICS), and it'd be very interesting to see Vizio do it because they're another american company (although they are manufacturing in asia like everyone else).

Anybody but Samsung and their god-awful greenish AMOLED screens. Bring me a Sony or HTC or LG anyday.

nzi0169 5 pts

SONY need to shine. they can use their SLCD, camera and build quality. But ASUS is not a bad choice either.

NickLaSorsa 5 pts

Its a shame Nokia is solely focused on Windows Phone, a design like the Lumia 900 with top specs and a pure Google experience would be ideal.

BrandonWood1 5 pts

Asus definitely needs a chance. That would be awesome.

DamaniMitchell 5 pts

BrandonWood1 i would say ASUS, except they now make the nexus tablet.

BrandonWood1 5 pts

DamaniMitchell  May I ask what you mean? I know they make the Nexus tablet, but why should that stop them from making a nexus phone?

roboguy12 31 pts

DamaniMitchell  BrandonWood1 Agreed with BrandonWood. Samsung has the Nexus S and the Galaxy Nexus. There's nothing preventing an OEM from having two Nexus devices.

DamaniMitchell 5 pts

HTC did a great job with the N1, but i would give sony a shot. They are known for having great/beautiful hardware, and missed out because they jumped on the android wagon a little late. Would be a win win for google and sony.

NickSarafolean 5 pts

Motorola for sure. Google owns them and after using a Motorola phone as my personal phone, I can honestly say that they make some fantastic hardware and now with ICS, software is also top notch.

bobodod 5 pts

HTC with a landscape, slide-out hardware keyboard and 720p screen.

nathan118 15 pts

bobodod You really think the fourth nexus phone will have a slide-out keyboard? Ummm, no.

bobodod 5 pts

nathan118 Please refrain from trolling. The poll above asks "If you were in charge of Google’s Nexus division, who would you choose to be the manufacturer of the next Nexus? What would be your ideal specifications?" That's what I was posting in response to, not whatever you imagined.

nathan118 15 pts

bobodod Wow, someone doesn't like having their hopes and dreams shattered. Do you label everyone with differing opinions a troll?

bobodod Slideout keyboard on a Nexus device. Eww!

roneyizpie 5 pts

HTC, Motorola, ASUS, or Sony. I like Samsung but I want something that feels premium.

ady2k2000 6 pts

I say Moto.... since Google owns Moto mobility, they will have an easier way to update their phones while only dealing with carriers.

573W1E 18 pts

I find HTC's main faults lie with their software, while their hardware is very nice (although I can't forgive them for not including a MicroSD card slot or a removable battery on the One X and S) While Samsung's faults are with their hardware, it's all a bit plasticy. I don't mind if HTC or Samsung produced the next Nexus phone, but I hope it doesn't go the way of the Galaxy Nexus and instead of being a Google branded phone, it's just a Samsung unlike the Nexus One and S

jhernandez4688 13 pts

@573W1E - A Nexus branded device is supposed to be a Google device. that's the whole point on it being a Nexus. jeez
