Sony’s mobile presence in the US has never been large, but that’s not stopping them from launching a couple unlocked phones. First up is the Xperia S, which is almost identical to the Xperia ion on AT&T, but lacking in the 4G department. Specs include a 1.5GHz Snapdragon S3 processor, 4.5-inch 72op display, and 12MP camera. Priced at $559.99, this is no cheap toy.
Next is the mid-range Xperia P, which offers 1GHz ST-Ericsson dual-core processor, 8MP camera and qHD display. The mid-range phone gets a mid-range price of $479.99. Finally, $299.99 can score a Xperia U, with a WVGA screen, 5MP camera, and a changeable bottom. All of the phones are sold unlocked, running Android 2.3, with GSM compatibility on AT&T’s HSPA+ network.
It’s a tough market, especially for new phones that are launched two Android versions behind. Sony has stated that they will update the phones to Android 4.0, but when is anyone’s guess. Anybody thinking about grabbing a new Xperia?
