Android Powered Nikon Photos Leak

Point and shoot cameras have all been the same, relying either on optics or gimmicks to stand out from the crowd. How can you make a camera better when it shoots in great quality? Toss Android onto it, of course!

The rumored Nikon S80C will be a traditional point and shoot with a big touchscreen showing off Android Gingerbread. The app selection will appeal to many, who want to ruin great quality photos with Instagram (I kid!). Also various connectivity options mean you can post photos straight to sites, instead of needing a computer to do so. Possibilities are expanded by the inclusion of Android, and this could very well be a great device.

What do you guys think? Is an Android powered camera a good idea? Or just a gimmick? Will it pair well with Nikon’s famed image quality, or will it be a detriment to it? Tell us in the comments!

Now add global multi-network phone capability and you're set. The perfect tourist phone!

I was looking for something like this for my dad last year. He likes taking pics but doesn't think too much of cell phones, but still needs one. Unfortunately everyone and there dog is shooting for either credit card thin or pseudo tablet style phones, and that really doesn't appeal to him.

I haven't done any deep research on this, (maybe I should look on dpreview.com) but one glaring miss here that you didn't cover is: How is it connecting to the internet? If it is wifi only, then most consumers would be back to square one looking for a Starbucks or McDonalds. For me, I think I'd rather just use a Eye-Fi card, rather than get another camera.

Best thing about a camera phone is the ability to quickly share to social networks etc. without the need of syncing or connecting to a computer. I like the idea of a normal camera running Android as you have a better lens and it's resulting pictures being able to take advantage of the applications used to quickly share and edit photos. My only gripe is, why Gingerbread? Will be interesting to see what the development community will do with it.
